The a Cappella Choral Music of Benjamin Britten

Description: The twentieth century has witnessed a renaissance in the composition of choral music. Not since the Baroque, has choral writing held the prominent position with composers that it has today. At the same time, English composers have regained a stature and influence they have not held since the time of Purcell. It was not until the time of Edward Elgar, Gustave Holst, and Ralph Vaughn-Williams that English music began to recover from the decline of the nineteenth century. Benjamin Britten has play… more

Adaptation of the Siemens Diffractometer for Precision Lattice Parameter Determinations of Single Crystals

Description: Modifications to the A.A.E.C.'s Siemens Diffractometer are described which enable precision lattice parameter determinations on single crystals. Analysis of the errors and consideration of results suggest that accuracies of about 1--2 parts in 10/sup 5/ are obtained on small beryllium oxide crystals. Details of alignment and measurement procedure are included.

Adsorption of Activated Nitrogen

Description: The information obtained in this experiment was deduced by measuring the pumping speed as a function of the energy of the incident electrons and as a function of the energy which ions hit the surface.

An Analysis of the Political Career of Carl Schurz, 1868-1888

Description: Carl Schurz, appearing on the American political stage during a period of great change, felt the influence of human events as he formulated his political thinking. He also was affected by his German birth, education, and revolutionary activity before his immigration to the United States. Indeed, it appears that much of his political thought was reaction to existing circumstances or events rather than pure contemplative thinking.

An Analytical Model for Fission-Product Transport and Deposition From Gas Streams

Description: An important mechanism in the transport and deposition of very small particles from gas streams to the surfaces of a conduit is diffusion due to the Brownian movement of particles. The heat-mass analogy is used to describe the diffusion, and equations are derived for the deposition of fission products from a gas stream to wall surfaces as a function of the distance along the conduit. Effects of radioactive decay on the validity of the heat-mass analogy in applying standard heat transfer relatio… more

Approximate Models for Distributed-Parameter Heat-Transfer Systems

Description: Summary: The use of dimensionless-parameter frequency response diagrams to determine accuracies of lumped-parameter approximations is demonstrated by two examples: calculation of the heat flux at the surface of a semi-infinite solid due to temperature fluctuations of an adjacent fluid; and the response of a counterflow heat exchanger to inlet fluid temperature perturbations. Dimensionless system parameters make it possible to use general-purpose plots to find the error in particular approxima… more

Assimilation of Organic Carbon by Aquatic Actinomycetes

Description: There were two purposes of this investigation: the first was to develop a method for studying spore germination, hyphal growth and mycelial development of the aquatic actinomycetes under the microscope so that the life cycle of this organism could be continuously followed. The second purpose was to determine the rate of carbon utilization from various types of nutritional sources, and to correlate this with the colony development and spore formation.

Beam Extraction From the MURA 50 Mev FFAG Accelerator

Description: The components, operation, and performance of the beam extraction system are described, and the selection and proporties of particle orbits in the extraction channel are discussed. Single accelerated beam pulses were observed to last 37 nsec, and 40 mamp per pulse currents were measured in the extracted beam. The 45-Mev stacked beam was also extracted in a single turn from the 50- Mev electron accelerator. (D.C.W.)

Bibliography of Publications on Compounds of Gas Hydrate Type

Description: "This is the first of a series of bibliographical reports listing references on a particular subject which is of special interest to the Office of Saline Water. The initial bibliography was prepared by K. W. Allen of the University of Pittsburgh with subsequent additions and editing by Dr. Karl Kase of the Office of Saline Water" (p. ii).

CALCULATIONS OF YIELDS OF PRODUCTS IN HIGH-FLUX NEUTRON IRRADIATIONS OF HEAVY ELEMENT SAMPLES

Description: Calculations have been made of the build-up of higher nuclides in samples of various heavy-element starting materials, at neutron fluxes ranging from 4 x 10/sup 13/ to 1 x 10/sup 16/ n/ cm/sup 2//sec, including the flux expected from the HFIR reactor at Oak Ridge (namely, 5 x 10/sup 15/ n/cm/sup 2// sec). Attempts have been made to estimate yields of the heavier fermium isotopes and of Md/sup 259/ by means of the nuclear properties predicted from systematics. The results indicate that it may be… more

Code Listings for the Floss III - Compatible Programs Including Floss Type 3 and Type 12, Nomac, and Dash N

Description: FLOSS III is a third-generation version of a digital computer program which solves a one-dimensional difference representation of the momentum, energy, continuity, and state equations for turbulent, compressible gas flow in equivalent hydraulic channels. Extensive use of this program has been employed in the design and performance analyses of Pluto-type nuclear heat exchangers, and in the specific case of the Tory II-A test series, agreement was obtained to better than 5% for all experimentally… more
