PATHFINDER ATOMIC POWER PLANT STEAM SEPARATOR DEVELOPMENT

Description: Development of a steam separator the Pathfinder Reactor is reported. A full-scale separator model was developed through the combination of scale-model testing and the application of principles associated with the existing theory of centrifugal separation. This model was put through full-scale air-water tests which led to modifications and a final design which meets Pathfinder requirements. Design data are included for the reactor and the steam separator. (J.R.D.)

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF ULTRASONIC VIBRATIONS ON BURNOUT HEAT FLUX WITH BOILING WATER. Quarterly Technical Progress Report No. 3, April-June 1961

Description: The heat-transfer loop was completed and is in operation. Difficulty was experienced in obtaining a sufficiently strong connection between the burnout- detector voltage tap and the heating element. This problem and its potential solution are described. The lack of means of obtaining controlled burnout prevented collection of data on the burnout effects of the ultrasonic field. (auth)

Stress and Deflection of Boiler Fuel Element Boxes

Description: Equations were derived by strain-energy methods for analyzing the stress and deflection in the boiler fuel element boxes used in the Pathfinder nuclear reactor. These boxes are of two types, both constructed of Zircaloy lI. One box is approximately 5 in. sq. The second is approximately 10 1/2 in. sq divided internally into four compartments (5 in. sq) by a cruciform control-rod guide structure. Stress and deflection in the box walls are caused by pressure differences across the walls. The equat… more

The Specific Heat of Dysprosium Metal Between 0.4 and 4 K

Description: Submitted to Illinois Inst. of Tech., Chicago. A He/sup 3/ cryostat was built to measure the specific heat of rare earth metals which have a component, at low temperatures, attributable to the electrons in the incomplete 4f shell. The specific heat of dysprosium from 0.4 to 4.2 deg K was measured. Pertinent theories about specific heats are outlined. The apparatus included the cryostat, vacuum and He/sup 3/ systems, calorimeter, carbon thermometer, heater, and magnetic thermometer. The experime… more

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant Analog Simulator.

Description: The steady-state and dynamlc characterlstics of the Pathfinder systems were simulated on a dual-console Pace Analog Computer. The derivation of the system equations, the assumptions involved, their numerical evaluation, and their conversion to analog circuitry are described. The Pathfinder system is unique because of the internal nuclear superheater, and controlled, forced recirculation. In simulating this system the following major assumptions were maden the reactor is a boiling-water type; mo… more

Laboratory-Scale Demonstration of the Fused Salt Volatility Process

Description: The feasibility of processing enriched irradiated zirconium--uranium alloy fuel by the fused salt-fluoride volatility procedure has been demonstrated in laboratory tests with fuel having a burnup of over 10%. Uranium recoveries were greater than 99% and decontamination factors for radioactive fission products were 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 6/. The UF/sub 6/ product contained significant quantities of nonradioactive impurities; additional work in this area is needed. (auth)

A PULSED EDDY CURRENT TEST SYSTEM USING REFLECTED FIELDS

Description: An eddy current test system is described in which the test information is detected as a series of fields reflected from the metal surface and interior. Pulsed electromagnetic fields are caused to impinge upon the test specimen. These fields are restricted to a small cross sectional area over a path in space long enough to be useful for test purposes by devices called mask-apenture assemblies. This approach provides a number of advantages over conventional eddy current methods of comparable capa… more

Studies on Lymphocytes. [Part] 1. Lymphopenia Produced by Prolonged Extracorporeal Irradiation of Circulating Blood

Description: A method for extracorporeal irradiation of the circulating blood is described. Extracorporeal irradiation of the blood will produce a lymphopenia promptly which persists for weeks. Heparin in high doses in the calf produces a lymphocytosis and neutrophilic leukocytosis. (auth) Red cell sensitization by either agglutinating or incomplete antibodies was detected with an I/sup 131/ labeled rabbit antihuman globulin serum (RAG). Non-specific absorption of RAG by red cells was reduced to a minimum b… more
