Test Program for 30 Megawatt Prototype Sodium Intermediate Heat Exchanger and Steam Generator

Description: The designer's concept of a test program for the 30-Mw prototype intermediate heat exchanger and steam generator designed and fabricated as part of the Sodium Components Development Program is presented. The performance data will serve to verify the thermal design, or allow application of improved techniques to future designs, give an improved basis for stress analysis in design of future units, and demonstrate the capability and limitations of the units in relation to the performance specifications for which they were designed. Welding techniques for type 316 stainless steel are described. The specifications and operating conditions of the units are given along with instrumentation drawings showing test equipment design and arrangement.

The Adsorption and Surface Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Clean Iridium

Description: From abstract: "The adsorption of ethane, ethylene and acetylene on clean iridium in a field emission microscope has been found to cause characteristic changes in the work function of the iridium surface. Further changes, which are time and temperature dependent, result when such surfaces are heated. Flash filament experiments have shown that the changes in work function upon heating are due to desorption reactions and that the desorbed product consists principally of hydrogen. By assuming a linear relationship between surface coverage and work function, it has been possible to determine the desorption kinetics from the observed rates of work function change at various temperatures. The results are consistent with a mechanism involving stepwise surface dehydrogenation in which a pair of hydrogen atoms is removed from the hydrocarbon molecule in each step, followed by desoption of the adsorbed hydrogen. At very high temperatures the remaining carbon atoms are removed, presumably by evaporation."

The Scandium-Yttrium and Scandium-Zirconium System

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The scandium-yttrium and scandium-zirconium were studied by thermal and x-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the temperature of transition from hexagonal to bcc in the Sc-Y system at 43 at. pct Y and 1175°C; while the temperature of transition is raised in the Sc-Zr system to a maximum of 1415°C at 30 at. pct Zr."

Self-Diffusion in Polycrystalline Yttrium Oxide

Description: From abstract: "The self-diffusion coefficient of yttrium in yttrium oxide has been determined for polycrystalline Y2O3 in the temperature range 1400 to 1800°C. Radioactive Y-91 was deposited on sintered specimens of 94 to 97% theoretical density. The specimens were annealed under vacuum and sectioned. The following equation describes the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient over the range studied: D = 2.41 x 10[^]-4 exp (-43,900/RT) cm[^]2/sec."

A Needle in a Haystack

Description: Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to be isotopically pure at the time of production. The interference between the two resonances was found to have the effect of extending the 2[pi] spectrum toward the [omega] mass."

Bovine Thyroid I 131 in the Absence of Atmospheric Nuclear Weapons Tests

Description: Summary. Cattle in Reno, Nevada, exhibit a constant very low concentration of I 131 in their thyroid glands in the absence of known releases of I 131 to the atmosphere. This concentration is about 1 picocurie per gram of fresh thyroid tissue. ; This I 131 appears to originate below the tropopause
