Cost Estimation for Nuclear Reprocessing Plants : a Comparison of Methods

Description: A comparison of methods of capital cost estimation used for nuclear fuel reprocessing plants shows that, because of the special nature and complexity of such plants, cost estimation methods for conventional chemical plants involving the use of cost factors are not applicable and will give low estimates. Cost factors which are available from other countries where reprocessing plants are installed should be used with caution since those factors apply only for the particular design philosophy used… more

The Argonne Thermal Source Reactor

Description: The Argonne Thermal Source Reactor is a highly enriched, light-water- moderated thermal reactor. Movable shielding allows complete access to one face of the core. There is ready access to the central and 2 peripheral core locations, and it is possible to thrust samples with small reactivity effects into these locations. The reactor was approved for operation at 10 kw. Design and construction details are described to aid present and potential users of this facility. (auth)

Spectral Shift Control Reactor Basic Physics Program. Exponential Experiments at Elevated Temperatures on Lattices Moderated by D$sub 2$O-H$sub 2$O Mixtures

Description: Results of exponential experiments conducted at elevated temperatures on rod lattices of slightly-enriched UO/sub 2/ moderated by D/sub 2/O-- H/sub 2/O mixtures are summarized. The fuel rods, 4%-enriched UO/sub 2/ swaged in stainless steel, were 0.476-inch OD by 0.016-inch wall. The non-moderator- tomoderator volume ratio was 1.006. The two moderator compositions studied were light water (0% D/sub 2/O) and a D/sub 2/O-H/sub 2/O mixture containing 81.5 mole% D/sub 2/O. The experimental facility … more

SUMMARY OF HRT RUNS 22, 23 AND 24

Description: In runs 22, 23, and 24 the HRT was operated with downward flow through the core at powers up to 5 Mw. Because of leakage past the lower core tank patch, uranium could not be prevented from entering tbe blanket, so the concentration was deliberately kept above 1 g U/kg D/sub 2/O. The core power was about 0.6 of the total. Nuclear power fluctuations were larger than with upward core flow, and the cause was investigated intensively in run 22 at powers up to 1.8 Mw. Run 22 was terminated after 778 … more

An Evaluation of the Uranium Contamination on the Surfaces of Alclad Uranium-Aluminum Alloy Research Reactor Fuel Plates

Description: Reported radioactivity in the Low-Intensity Test Reactor (LITR) water coolant traceable to uranium contamination on the surfaces of the alclad uranium-- aluminum plate-tyne fuel element led to an investigation to determine the sources of uranium contamination on the fuel plate surfaces. Two possible contributors to surface contamination are external sources such as rolling-mill equipment, the most obvious, and diffusion of uranium from the uranium-aluminum alloy fuel into the aluminum cladding.… more

Effect of Reduced U-235 Price on Fuel Cycle Costs

Description: A study was made to determine the effect of changes in natural uranium cost and in separative work charges on fuel cycle costs in nuclear power plants. Reactors considered were a Dresden-type boiling water reactor (BWR) and a Yankee- type pressurized water reactor (PWR), with net power ratings of 100, 300, and 500 Mwe. Fuel cycle costs were calculated for these reactors, using either enriched uranium or U/sup 235/-thorium as the fuel material. The price schedule for uranium was based on a feed … more

THE REACTION OF GRAPHITE WITH NITROGEN AND OTHER PERTINENT THERMODYNAMIC SYSTEMS STUDIED WITH A MASS SPECTROMETER

Description: Experiments were conducted for analyzing equilibrium vapor compositions through the investigation of thermodynamic properties of a variety of materials. A Knudsen cell was constructed to hasten the approach of equilibrium in the graphite-nitrogen system. Results of the experiments concerning the reaction of graphite with nitrogen show the heat of formation of this species STA DELTA H/sub f/(CN)! to be 109 kcal/ mole, implying that its dissociation energy, D(CN) = 7.5 plus or minus 0.1 ev. These… more

Aqueous Processing of Thorium Fuels

Description: The status of aqueous processing methods for thorium fuels is summarized, with principal emphasis on the stainless steel-clad ThO/sub 2/UO/sub 2/ type. Data were obtained principally from laboratory-scale experiments with fully irradiated fuel samples and engineering-scale tests with unirradiated fuel. Stainless steel cladding was easily dissolved with 4 to 6M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ (Sulfex process) or 5M HNO/sub 3/-2M HCl (Darex process) in LCNA (Nionel type) or titanium equipment, respectively, in… more
