Delayed Failure Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium: Quarterly Report Number 1, September - December 1961

Description: Abstract: "The purpose of this investigation is to determine the extent to which zirconium exhibits delayed failure (static fatigue) as caused by a combination of absorbed hydrogen and applied stress. Both notched and unnotched specimens of unalloyed zirconium and Zircaloy-2 are being initially hydrogenated to 200 ppm by means of a modified Sieverts apparatus, and delayed failure studies are proceeding at room-temperature. Thus far only preliminary data on unnotched, unalloyed zirconium are ava… more

Literature Survey on World Isotope and Radiation Technology : First Semi-Annual Report Covering the Period from June 15, 1961 to December 14, 1961

Description: The following report is the first semi-annual report of a literature survey designed to investigate the uses and technology of radioisotopes in the countries of the world from 1955 to the present. This survey includes two phases: 1) involves the direct comparison of radioisotopic work in all fields in various countries as demonstrated at international conferences. 2) involves a more detailed examination and evaluation of the individual fields of interest selected previously (Phase II is also ex… more

Report on the Feasibility of a 15,000 Kilowatt Electric Power Station Using Geothermal Heat Sources at Mammoth Area, Mono County, California

Description: This report comprises a study of all factors pertinent to the feasibility and economics of converting into electric power, the geothermal energy issuing from drilled wells. The study applies particularly to wells in the Mammoth area, California, but many of its conclusions may be applied to other locations. The scope of this report includes: (1) Evaluation of heat cycles for the conversion of the geothermal energy to electric power in a single unit 15,000 kilowatt plant; (2) Selection of the mo… more

The Angular Dependence of Thermal Neutron Spectra in Lattices

Description: This technical report discusses techniques that have been developed for "computing the angular thermal flux spectrum emerging from a lattice. These methods are applied to water lattices and it is found that the computed spectra are sensitive to the geometrical description of the lattice, but insensitive to the anisotropic scattering by water. Comparisons with measured spectra indicate that corrections for gradients and the finite size of the experimental lattice are important." -- from abstract… more

Determination of Diffusion Cooling in Graphite by Measurement of the Average Neutron Velocity

Description: From Abstract: "The diffusion cooling coefficient in graphite has been determined by measuring the change in the asymptotic average velocity with buckling, by pulsed neutron methods. The times necessary to establish equilibrium spectra in graphite and heavy water have been measured and are reported."

Development and evaluation of spire pulse for AlSi lead-dip canning

Description: In the AlSi process, the I&E fuel element is assembled in a two-piece aluminum container consisting of an outer cylindrical shell and an inner tube containing an integrally impacted cap wafer which forms the top end and cap during canning. Both autoclave failures and reactor failures have been attributed to porosity in the AlSi and non-wetting of the aluminum wafer with AlSi. Porosity and non-wetting in the area of the cap closure provides a pathway for water to penetrate through to the uranium… more

A compilation of water temperatures near Grand Coulee Dam and in environs of Lake Roosevelt

Description: This tabulation of data collected since 1952 by the author was made in response to a request by the Atomic Energy Commission. It is understood it is to be transmitted to the Bureau of Reclamation for their information. The data are to afford basic information to support the Bureau`s decision in regard to a third power house at Grand Coulee Dam.

Uranium in Peru

Description: Introduction: From the inception of the effort to utilize atomic energy Perú has been of interest as a possible source of radioactive raw materials because of its great variety and abundance of metals. Because of this and a desire at that time to develop additional supplies of uranium, a cooperative program to search for uranium deposits was initiated in 1953 by the Junta and the USAEC.
