The Effect of Noise on Pulse Height Resolution

Description: Report wherein "[a] statistical study of base line fluctuations is used to relate noise measurements with the resolution spread of a pulse height analysis system. The resolution is inversely proportional to the signal-to-noise ratio. The proportionality constant is derived on the basis of a normal amplitude distribution for noise. A review of noise measuring techniques is given and adapted for use with electronic voltmeters. The form factors required to interpret meter readings in terms of the … more

PM-1 Reactor Core Final Design Report

Description: From introduction: This report presents and evaluates the final design of the reactor core for the PM-1 Nuclear Power Plant. The design criteria required a pressurized water cooled and moderated core with a two-year life at design power and a positive shutdown margin under all conditions with either one control rod stuck completely out or with two control rods stuck in the operating condition.

Uranium in Peru

Description: Introduction: From the inception of the effort to utilize atomic energy Perú has been of interest as a possible source of radioactive raw materials because of its great variety and abundance of metals. Because of this and a desire at that time to develop additional supplies of uranium, a cooperative program to search for uranium deposits was initiated in 1953 by the Junta and the USAEC.

Neutron Flux and Spectra Measurements in the Sandia Pulsed Reactor Facility (SPRF)

Description: Introduction: Neutron measurements were made in the pulsed reactor building and on the safety screen of the pulsed reactor in order to determine the neutron yield of the reactor as a function of (1) distance from the reactor centerline, (2) direction in the reactor building, and (3) position on the reactor safety screen.

LABORATORY TECHNIQUES FOR VERY HIGH PRESSURES AND THE BEHAVIOR OF METALS UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING

Description: Particular attention is given to the production of very high pressures by colliding thin metal plates with stationary targets. Shock wave conservation equations are developed for this geometry that enable one to convert measurable quantities into equation of state data. Some results and techniques of high- pressure experiments are presented. Since the temperature rise behind a shock wave is not measurable, a brief description is given of how temperature estimates are made. Auxiliary experiments… more

NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS: CLINICAL AND BIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF MANGANESE

Description: From Symposium on Radioactivation Analysis and its Application to the Biological Sciences, Saclay, France, Sept. 1963. The use of neutron activation analysis for studying the metabolism of manganese in the body is discussed. Results of various clinical and biological studies of manganese metabolism are described. Some of the results indicate that pigments (melanin) in general contain high manganese concentrations and might play a role in extrapyramidal diseases. (D.L.C.)

Effects of Chronic Excess Salt Ingestion. Experimental Hypertension in the Rat, Correlation With Human Hypertension

Description: Results are reported from a study of hypertension in rats. Variables investigated included excess salt (NaCl) ingestion, genetic factors, sex, and age. The data indicate that excess salt ingestion unmasked the hypertensive trait in genetically sensitive animals. The influence of age was found to be apparent rather than real and the result of the longer time over which noxious environmental factors exert their influence on blood pressure in individuals with varying degrees of susceptibility. Cor… more
