0-2 kv Flash Tube Supplies

Description: The power supplies designed and constructed to power high-intensity flash tubes are described. Three supplies, capable of charging 100 mfd to 2 kv with a repetltion rate of not less than 0.8 sec, are operated remotely from a control panel containing 3 powerstats. The power supplies are full wave center trapped rectifiers employing silicon rectifiers. (M.C.G.)

A 1000 HOUR TEST OF A CORROSION PRODUCT SEPARATOR UNIT IN A HAYNES ALLOY NO. 25 LOOP CONTAINING MERCURY--TEST G-16

Description: One of the major unsolved problems affecting the life of the SNAP II Power Conversion System is the mass transfer of corrosion products by mercury and subsequent deposition. It is feared that the corrosion products might tend to accumulate in critical areas such as orifices, bearings and so forth. Therefore, this test was conducted to evaluate a corrosion product separator and to determine the influence of corrosion product removal on corrosion rate. The corrosion product separator was successf… more

14CO2 INCORPORATION INTO THE NUCLEIC ACIDS OF SYNCHRONOUSLYGROWING CHLORELLA CELLS

Description: A study of the incorporation of {sup 14}CO{sub 2} into cell components of synchronously growing Chlorella pyrenoidosa has shown that DNA is synthesized primarily during the latter stages of the cell cycle prior to cell division. RNA was synthesized at an approximately equal rate during each of the three phases of the cell growth studied. No major differences were noted in the incorporation of {sup 14}CO{sub 2} into the soluble cell components in these long-term incorporation studies.

The Absolute Abundance of the Chromium Isotopes in Some Secondary Minerals

Description: Isotopic assays have been made on the Cr in samples from 14 different chrominiferous minerals from different geographic and meteoritic sources. The results of the assays indicate that it is not possible to state unequivocally that variations in isotopic composition have been observed. (auth)

Annual Progress Report on Fuel Element Development for Fiscal Year 1961

Description: Progress in fuels and materials development is summarized. Major areas of investigation include a materials study by means of sample fuel plates containing uranium alloys or cermets, burnable poisons, non-uniform fuel and poison distributions and clad with various aluminum alloys; and an engineering study of fuel element geometries optimized in heat transfer, hydraulics, and materials strength. Up to 45 wt% U-Al alloys, 6 to 65 wt% UO/-Al and U3O6-Al dispersions, including enrichments ranging f… more

The Application of Wax Laps to Vibratory Polishers

Description: Wax lap preparation for the vibratory polisher consists of melting the wax, pouring it into the bowl, and allowing it to solidify. The wax adheres to the bowl without difficulty. Specimens to be polished were mounted in bakelite or lucite. Grooves formed in the surface of the way can be removed by melting with hot water. (R.J.S.)

Aqueous Processing of Thorium Fuels

Description: The status of aqueous processing methods for thorium fuels is summarized, with principal emphasis on the stainless steel-clad ThO/sub 2/UO/sub 2/ type. Data were obtained principally from laboratory-scale experiments with fully irradiated fuel samples and engineering-scale tests with unirradiated fuel. Stainless steel cladding was easily dissolved with 4 to 6M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ (Sulfex process) or 5M HNO/sub 3/-2M HCl (Darex process) in LCNA (Nionel type) or titanium equipment, respectively, in… more

The Argonne Thermal Source Reactor

Description: The Argonne Thermal Source Reactor is a highly enriched, light-water- moderated thermal reactor. Movable shielding allows complete access to one face of the core. There is ready access to the central and 2 peripheral core locations, and it is possible to thrust samples with small reactivity effects into these locations. The reactor was approved for operation at 10 kw. Design and construction details are described to aid present and potential users of this facility. (auth)

Automatic Solution of Optimum Design Problems on a Digital Computer

Description: A description is given of a method suitable for the automatic solution of certain optimum design problems on a digital computer for cases where the number of constraints imposed on the design is not greater than the number of design variables. The problem is transformed to one requiring the minimization or maximization of an unconstrained function, for which a gradient method is used.

CHARACTERIZATION OF UO$sub 2$ POWDERS. Quarterly Report No. 5, October 10, 1961 to January 10, 1962

Description: The particle size distribution of UO/sub 2/ powders gave good eorrelation with the sintered density of pellets. The method involves gravity sedimentation techniques. The green pressing step of pellet fabrication was found to affect the particle size distribution of the UO/sub 2/ powders. The magnitude of this effect is considered in characterization of the pressed powders. (J.R.D.)
