Use of Discharge Tubes in Spectrochemical Analysis

Description: While this survey of discharge tube sources probably has not yielded information of much direct interest to the great majority of analysts, it seems probable that these sources will become of greater interest as they become better developed and more demand is created for extension of spectrochemical methods to non-metallic samples.

Efficiency pf Multiple Traversal Targets

Description: The efficiency of multiple traversal targets is defined as the probability that a proton dies by making a nuclear collision in the target rather than by hitting the limit of the synchrotron aperture. The efficiencies of Be, Al, Cu, and Pb targets are shown for 15 and 30-Bev protons in the Brooknaven AGS. Beryllium was found to be the most efficient. (M.C.G.)

Measurements of Negative Muon Lifetimes in Light Isotopes

Description: "Muon capture rates have been measured in a large number of the heavier elements in recent years. The amount of data available on the light elements, however, is scant. It would seem that lifetime measurements of muons in light elements would be of particular interest with regard to understanding the nuclear structure and determining the strength of the weak interaction. Furthermore, only one previous measurement of the muon capture "'isotope effect" has been done, that being for chlorine isot… more

Measurement of the Prompt Neutron Lifetime in HIFAR

Description: The reactor transfer function of HIFAR has been measured at low power and compared with the calculated response determine the prompt neutron lifetime. Lifetime values in the range 600 to 800 microseconds, depending on the position of absorbers withing the core and reflector , were obtained with an estimated error of less than 100 microseconds.

Use of a Radioisotope Method to Measure Flow in the HIFAR Light Water Cooling Circuit

Description: A radioisotope method has been used to measure the flow in the light water circuit of HIFAR. A mean value of 756 pounds/sec was obtained which is in fair agreement with conventional Dall tube method. Attempts to measure the flow through individual cooling towers were not entirely successful, but some useful information was obtained.

Alpha Air Monitoring with [alpha]/[beta] Ratio Compensation for Natural Interference

Description: Abstract. Results are presented of a theoretical study to calculate the [alpha]/[beta] ratio of filter-collected natural airborne radioactivity. The detection of airborne plutonium contamination by noting increases in this [alpha]/[beta] ratio is discussed. A modification of this approach which provides a more uniform response to alpha airborne contamination is described.

Analysis of Carbon Monoxide-Nitrogen Mixtures by High Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Description: From abstract: "A single focusing mass spectrometer has been converted into a double focusing instrument. Relatively high resolution is obtained by decreasing the slit widths and minimizing the ion-optic aberrations. A relatively low ion accelerating voltage (2000 volts) is utilized compared to those normally used for high resolution work. The entire construction was performed at these laboratories. Essentially all of the original equipment was reused in the double focusing system. Although the… more

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core Temperature and Flow Instrumentation (Task XIV) Covering Special Test Procedures.

Description: Abstract: Test procedures for special tests involving in-core SM-1 temperature and flow instrumentation are described (Task XIV Package Tests). These tests involve in-core steady state flow and temperature measurements, loss of flow transients, load transients, reduced primary system pressure operations and reduced element flow. The thermal and hydraulic conditions prevailing in these tests, including steady state and transient burnout rations, are developed. The effects of reduced system pres… more

The Significance of Urine Uranium Excretion Data

Description: Abstract: Urine uranium excretion data for persons exposed to uranium by inhalation are analyzed Data from both chronic and single massive exposures are included, and a generalized excretion pattern, applicable to any uranium compound absorbed by inhalation, is proposed. ...It is shown that it is not usually practical to use urine samples to monitor individual exposures. Such an evaluation is possible only with a suitable series of samples collected at known intervals past the exposure. It … more

Fabrication of UO2 Fuel Elements by Vibrational Compaction

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Arc-fused UO2 was vibrationally compacted to as high as 93.4% of theoretical density inside a stainless steel sheath tube. Selected particle sizes were used, and the assembly was vibrated axially in the frequency range of 300 to 1500 cycles per second. The same blend of UO2 particle sizes was vibrationally compacted to 87.5% of theoretical density within the annulus between two concentric stainless steel sheath tubes. The effects of particle size distribution,… more

River contamination reduction studies an evaluation of the artificial lake concept

Description: Currently the Irradiation Processing Department is working on a program which has as its goal the reduction of radioactive discharge to the Columbia River. The most significant radioactive isotopes of concern are the relatively long lived isotopes P{sup 32}, Zn{sup 65}, As{sup 76}, N{sub p}{sup 239} and Cr{sup 5l}. Because of their relatively long life they can be found in the Columbia River well below the Hanford Plant. P{sup 32}, because it is absorbed and concentrated by the river biota is o… more
