Acceleration of Deuterons or Alpha Particles in the AGS

Description: The magnetic field of the AGS ring can contain particles of magnetic rigidity about 34 Bv/c. This includes not only protons of kinetic energy 33 Bev, but also 32 Bev deuterons, 64 Bev alpha particles, and conceivably heavier nuclei such as 188 Bev carbon nuclei. It will be shown in this paper that such nuclei can be injected and accelerated in the AGS if some rather small modifications are made in the injection and acceleration systems. What physics could be done with such beams? Several types … more

Calculated fission product release from PRTR rupture

Description: Approximately 15 minutes after shutdown on August 21, 1962, evidence of a rupture was observed in the form of high radiation levels in the containment vessel and rupture monitor indications. Discharge of a special MgO-PuO{sub 2} test element revealed a cladding break of about 1.5 inches in length and about 1/4 inch wide in the widest place, located 36 inches from the top of the fuel element as it would have been oriented in the reactor. A visual examination in Radiometallurgy revealed that appr… more

Carbide Fuel Development. Progress Report, January 1, 1962 to March 31, 1962

Description: Reproducibly high density UC-PuC pellets containing minor amounts of (U,Pu)/sub 2/C/sub 3/ were made with nickel sintering aid. Average densities of 95% and maximum densities of 96.6% of theoretical were obtained. High density, singlephase UC-PuC pellets were made by sintering at high temperatures. Densities of 94% of theoretical appear to be attainable. Improved identification of microstructural constituents was made by means of metallography, x-ray diffraction, and microprobe analysis. Develo… more

Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1962

Description: Aqueous zirconium fuel processing studies, directed at adapting the hydrofluoric acid process to continuous dissolution-complexing in order to increase the capacity of the ICPP process, resulted in two successful approaches to the complexing-feed adjustment step. Continuous in-line adjustment (conversion of uranium(IV) to uranium(VI) necessary for extraction) was accomplished in one minute or less at approximately 90 deg C; surges of dissolver product from the operating dissolver up to 1.9 time… more

Comparison of Gaseous Waste Handling Systems for PL-3

Description: Gaseous waste handling systems are compared for direct and indirect boiling water and pressurized water reactors for PL-3 application. Areas that are common to the various concepts are not discussed since they do not enter into a comparison study. The major differences present are in the handling of active gases released to or held in the primary system coolant. These gases which could be present, their possibIe release from the system, and the necessary processing requirements are discussed in… more

Comprehensive Technical Report, General Electric Direct-Air-Cycle Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Program, Program Summary and References

Description: This is one of twenty-one volumes sumarizing the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Program of the General Electric Company. This volume discusses the background to the General Electric program, and summarizes the various direct-air-cycle nuclear test assemblies and power plants that were developed. Because of the requirements of high performance, low weight, and small size, vast improvements in existing technology were required to meet the flight objectives. The technological progress achieved during… more

Design of production test IP-468-A-FP, program for evaluation of alpha extruded fuel cores

Description: The alpha phase extrusion of dingot bars to rods for core blank heat treatment at MCW offers a three-fold incentive, including: (1) establishment of an independent alternate source of uranium cores, (2) a slight cost improvement of MCW extrusion over FMPC rolling of dingot and (3) potential improvement in core quality and performance. The purpose of this test is two-fold: (1) to evaluate gross dimensional stability and (2) to evaluate the gross irradiation performance of alpha phase extruded di… more

DEVELOPMENT OF FREEZE VALVE FOR USE IN THE MSRE

Description: Three types of frozen-seal valves'' were tested for possible use in the MSRE. The seal was melted by direct resistance heat, by induction heat, and by clamp-on Calrod heat. The frozen seal was made in a preformed restriction section of a standard piece of pipe by a cooling-gas jet stream directed at the restriction. All three valves performed satisfactorily through 100 test cycles. The Calrodheated valve was selected for MSRE use on the basis of simplicity of design and of operation. Two of the… more

Differential Neutron Thermalization. Annual Summary Report, October 1, 1961 Through September 30, 1962

Description: Experimental and theoretical work on the interaction mechanisms by which neutrons exchange energy with H atoms involves treating neutron thermalization as neutron interactions with energy levels in the atoms. Cold moderators are presently being studied in order to optimize the source of cold neutrons. Cold neutrons are provided from an accelerator arrangement that directs electrons against a Fansteel target producing fast neutrons. Thermal neutrons, produced by moderation of fast neutrons, are … more

Draft Rift Hazards Summary Review

Description: This document presents the Westinghouse Astronuclear Laboratory contribution to the RIFT flight safety review. While the presented herein is the best data that exists at this time, it can not be considered the final data. In consideration of the extremely dynamic nature of the program , it is intended to issue periodic revisions reporting new developments in the Westinghouse program.

Electron Requirements of Bonds in Metal Borides

Description: From abstract: "Electrical measurements have been made on CaB6, SrB6, BaB6, YB2, YB4, YB6, and YB12 for the purpose of testing models of the electronic structure of the boron atoms in the four boride types represented. The compounds CaB6, SrB6, and BaB6 were found to be semiconductors. The Hall coefficients of YB4 was also measured, but could not be interpreted because the free electron theory does not provide a theoretical value for comparison with experiment. The results are in agreement with… more

Fever--A One-Dimensional Few-Group Depletion Program for Reactor Analysis

Description: The one-dimensional difiusion-theory depletion program FEVER, written in FORTRAN-II for a 32,000-word computer is described. The code allows for the representation of self-shielded burnable poisons and provides methods for automatically adjusting control poisons in various regions of the reactor according to some specified sequence. No intermediate tape manipulation is required during the calculations, since all program and data storage are contained in the fast memory of the computer. Informat… more

HAPO IB Fission Product Shipping Cask Design Evaluation Report

Description: As a result of the interest in fission products for use as heat sources and/or radiation sources, in early 1960. Hanford was authorized to supply a semi-refined cerium-144 rare earth product to Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Facilities were installed for collecting this product and a cask war designed for shipping this product as a stabilized, dry powder. Since that time, numerous improvements have been made in the design of the HAPO I cask as described in Revision O of this document. In add… more
