Technical Concept-Operation Bren

Description: From Abstract: "The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Health Physics Research Reactor is to be attached to a hoist platform on a 1500-ft tower at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The project is a continuation of the studies commenced in 1956 for evaluating the radiation doses of persons exposed to nuclear weapons, especially the residents of Hiroshima and Nagaski, Japan. Measurements will be made of the energy, angular, and spatial distributions of the radiation from the reactor."

Vapor Compression with Secondary Heat-Transfer Media

Description: From Introduction: "The use of a secondary heat-transfer media in a vapor-compression distillation unit was suggested for investigation as a process for saline water conversion because previous studies on the vapor-compression cycle at low temperatures showed that the fixed charges on the compressor are a substantial part of the final water-product cast. Other fluids were evaluated as above, the results of which are shown in table 1. Data on the other fluids shown in table 1 will be found in th… more

Irreducible Representations of Line Groups: the Dynamics of Polymer Chains

Description: Abstract: "The symmetries of infinite polymer chain molecules are discussed using the concept of line groups. Explicit directions are given for obtaining the irreducible representations of line groups employing the formalism developed for three-dimensional space groups. Line groups containing primitive and nonprimitive operations are discussed. Detailed considerations of the line group Vh are given with specific applications to the polyethylene molecule. Directions for generating symmetry-adapt… more

STEAM SYSTEM AND FEEDWATER SYSTEM FAILURES

Description: The adequacy of the EGCR steam and feedwater systems for continued heat removal from the core was assessed for the following accidents: steam line failures, steam generator internal failures, and feedwater system failures. The reaction of the reactor coolant blowers and vessel cooling compressors to steam- helium mixtures was evaluated. The steam generator isolation systems are described. The containment system was found to be adequate to prevent activity release to the atmosphere in the event … more

THE PATH OF CARBON IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Description: It is almost sixty years since Emil Fischer was describing on a platform such as this one some of the work which led to the basic knowledge of the structure of glucose and its relatives. Today we will be concerned with a description of the experiments which have led to a knowledge of the principal reactions by which those carbohydrate structures are created by photosynthetic organisms from carbon dioxide and water, using the energy of light. The speculations on the way in which carbohydrate was… more
