Magnetic Properties of Insulators : Quarterly Report No. 2 Covering the Period from May 15, 1961 to August 15, 1961

Description: Abstract: "The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of color centers in additively colored KCl crystals is measured to observe the effects of optical bleaching at room temperature. Earlier measurements on the F-center are confirmed and the susceptibility is measured at 78 and 300 deg K over five decades of power, including the very low power region. The width and the saturation properties of the individual multiplets are studied in detail and the technique of making EPR measurements on inhomog… more

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance in Biology

Description: A review of the theories of electron paramagnetic resonance in biology is presented, including a discussion of the nature of the physical observation, followed by examples of materials of biological interest. Iq discussing these examples, information is presented in terms of the nature of the starting material under observation rather than the nature of the magnetic entities observed. The examples proceed from the simpler molecules of biological interest (metabolites, vitamins, cofactors) into … more

Solution Critical Experiments for the High Flux Isotope Reactor: Preliminary Calculations

Description: A condensed version of this report was presented on December 12, 1960 at the San Francisco meeting of the American Nuclear Society under the title Solution Critical Experiments for High Flux Isotope Reactor Studies, Part B Calculations. Nuclear calculations were made for critical experiments of a flux trap type reactor that neutron wise resembled the proposed High Flux Isotope Reactor. The purpose was to evaluate the adequacy of certain calculational models for use in HFIR studies. In general, … more

Preliminary Analysis of the HFIR Control Rods

Description: An analysis is made of the HFIR control concept in order to evolve a mechanical design for the control rods. Since the original design considered does not meet the objectives, the design is altered to include 1% holes in the white region and 2 to 4% holes in the grey region.

Fabrication and Inspection Procedures for Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor Burst-Slug-Detection Tube and Thermocouple Penetrations

Description: Satisfactory methods were developed for penetrating the stainless steel burst-slag-detection tubes and stainless steel-clad thermocouples through the carbon steel pressure shell of the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR). The burst-slug-detection system permits the positive identification of a channel containing a defective fuel element. while the thermocouples will be used to measure temperatures from numerous points within the reactor. Both types of penetrations require the welding of rela… more

OC-ORR Loop No. 2 Check Valve Tests

Description: Air pressure drop and helium back-leakage tests have been conducted on ball-check valves proposed for use in the OC-ORR Loop No. 2. These valves are being installed to prevent the bypassing of helium thru either of the paralleled compressors when one is inoperative. t is concluded that incompressible-flow loss coefficients adequately describe the pressure drop characteristic over the flow range investigated and, on this basis, curves of helium pressure drop vs flow rates and Reynolds' number ha… more

LT-1, a General Reactor Lifetime Program for IBM-7090

Description: The LT-1 code calculates isotopic concentrations, absorption and fission rates, effective multiplication, and flux ration as a function of time for an infinite heterogeneous or homogeneous medium. A leakage correction if applied. Both equilibrium and batch loaded cycles are covered, and both thorium and U238 systems. Absorptions in control material are assumed at each point in time so that the flux ratios are always characteristic of the just-critical system.

Thorium Breeder Reactor Evaluation. Part I, Fuel Yields and Fuel Cycle Costs of a Two-Regional, Molten Salt Breeder Reactor

Description: The MSBR (1000 Mwe station) is capable of giving fuel yields of about 75/yr (doubling time = 14 years0 at a fuel cycle cost of approximately 1.5 mills/kwhr. At fuel yields of 1 to 2%/yr (DT = 100 to 50 years), the fuel cycle cost extrapolates to 0.65 mills/kwhr; at 4%/yr (DT = 25 years), the fuel cycle cost is about 0.85 mills/kwhr. All system were optimized with respect to fuel cycle processing time.
