Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION SUMMARY REPORT, OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 1960

Description: Chemical-metallurgical processing studies were made of pyrometallurgical development snd research, and fuel processing facilities for EBR-II. Fuel-cycle applications of fluidization and volatility techniques included laboratory investigations of fluoride volatility processes, engineeringscale development, and conversion of UF/sub 6/ to UO/sub 2/. Reactor safety studies consisted of metal oxidation and ignition kinetics, and metal-water reactions. Reactor chemistry investigations were conducted … more

Conceptual Design of a Coupled Breeding Superheating Reactor, CBSR

Description: The conceptual design of the Coupled Breeding Superheating Reactor, CBSR, for achieving a positive breeding gain and for producing 65 Mw of electric power is presented. The design combines a steam-cooled fast region and a nonboiling pressurized light-water-cooled thermal region. The advantage offered by this arrangement as compared with that using a solid moderator in the thermal zone is that, if a power excursion occurs, the water will increase the void content and tend to limit the excursion.… more

Damage to Conventional and Special Types of Residences Exposed to Nuclear Effects

Description: Ten residential structures of wood, brick, lightweight reinforced concrete block, and lightweight precast concrete slabs were exposed in pairs to the effects of a nuclear device of approximately 30 kt yield, detonated atop a 500-ft tower. The houses represented various structural types, and two houses of each type were tested. One house was located at an anticipated overpressure at which collapse or major damage might be expected and the other was located at an anticipated overpressure at which… more

Development of Nondestructive Tests for the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor Fuel Element

Description: The Title I design fuel assembly and each of its components for the Experimental Gas-cooled Reactor are described. The development of the specific nondestructive testing techniques for the evaluation of the components and the fabricated fuel capsule is presented. These techniques include penetrants, pulse- echo and resonance ultrasonics, radiography, eddy-currents, helium leak testing, and others. Discussion is made on the capabilities and limitations of these techniques for the specific inspec… more

Evaluation of an Arctic Ice-Free Land Site and Results of C-130 Aircraft Test Landings, Polaris Promontory, North Greenland 1958-1959

Description: Abstract: "Field investigations of an ice-free land area at Polaris Promontory, Hall Land in northwest Greenland were undertaken to determine if this area could support austere military aircraft operations. Detailed scientific observations of geology, meteorology, natural terrain features of the area were made, thorough investigations of the soil features and bearing strength were conducted, and an airstrip was prepared and marked. Successful test landings by a C-130 aircraft were made on the a… more

Fractional Parentage Coefficients in Intermediate Coupling

Description: Fractional parentage coefficients are obtained which connect certain low- lying states in the 1p shell without the necessity of referring to either an LS or jj representation. The possibility of doing this algebraically is based on the generator method of producing the wave functions of these states. (auth)

Hydrides Of Germanium, Tin, Arsenic And Antimony

Description: Volatile hydrides may be prepared from ether solutions by the reaction of the appropriate chlorides with lithium hydroaluminate. In this general method, it is necessary to work with strictly anhydrous reagents and solvents because of the great reactivity of lithium hydroaluminate toward water. The procedures described here are believed to be much more convenient because the reducing agent employed is potassium hydroborate, which is relatively insensitive toward water. Since only aqueous solutio… more
