THE DYNAMIC PINCH AS A HIGH-INTENSITY LIGHT SOURCE FOR OPTICAL MASER PUMPING

Description: >The optical radiation that occurs in a dynamic plasma pinch experiment depends in part on the amount and type of impurity atoms present in the system. By proper choice of these impurities, it should be possible to tailor the optical radiation from the pinch in intensity, spectrum, and duration such that the kinetic energy of motion (1OO to 1OOO joules) appears as radiation enengy in less than 10/sup -6/ sec. This should provide a good method of optical pumping for pulse optical maser operation… more

High-Temperatuer Creep Evaluation in Carbon Dioxide Atmosphere : Summary Report, October 1, 1959 to March 31, 1961

Description: This report follows an investigation made to determine creep-rupture data for three sheet materials. Fourteen of sixteen tests were made in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide within hermetically sealed capsules, analyzing the reaction of the three sheet metals: 347 stainless steel, iron-aluminum-chromium alloy designated 261C, and a zirconium-base alloy, AE1H. Minimum creep rate, per cent elongation, and rupture life were determined and reported.

Containment in Cusped Plasma Systems

Description: "A survey of the current theoretical picture of plasma containment in cusped magnetic configurations is presented together with a mention of the points of contact which exist or might soon be made to exist with experiment. A theory of containment was developed which is applicable to the whole range of plasma densities from a tenuous plasma in an essentially vacuum magnetic field to a fully developed plasma which completely excludes the magnetic field from its interior. Also presented are cursor… more

Fast Pulse-Amplitude Discriminators

Description: Pulse-amplitude discriminators are useful in nuclear counting to separate signals of greater amplitude from a background of unwanted or noise signals of lesser amplitude. As used here, the term "fast" implies circuits capable of responding to pulses between a nanosecond and a microsecond in duration. An ideal discriminator would produce for any incoming signal whose amplitude is greater than a threshold bias level, an output pulse of constant amplitude, duration, and delay with respect to the i… more

Hazards Report for the SM-1 Core II With Special Components

Description: Abstract: This technical report describes the changes incurred in the SM-1 by the insertion of the SM-1 Core II and special components. The special components consist of impact specimens, a boron gradient rod, SM-2 elements, a PM-1-M element, and high burnup SM-1 Core I elements. The change in hazards, due to operation of SM-1 with Core II and the special components is evaluated. The analysis indicates there is no change in hazards.

HECT II Compressor Pressure Drop Test

Description: In applications where more than one HECT II compressor is used in a loop, in either parallel or series arrangement, it becomes important to know the pressure drop across an inoperative compressor for both the "turbine stationary" and the "turbine free" conditions over a considerable flow range of the flowing medium. This report contains the results of pressure drop tests conducted with air at 14.7 psia and 80 degrees F.

MOUND LABORATORY MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT FOR MARCH 1961

Description: Adhesives. The effects obtained when diols and triols are used to cure Adiprene L-213 are discussed. Most of the formulations are very viscous and present difficulties in degassing operations. Ionium Project. Four plant samples having 1 ppm or more of Th/sup 2//sup 3//sup 0/ were analyzed for Th/sup 2//sup 3//sup 0/ in two different ways, one using HNO/sub 3/ digestion and the other using HClO/sub 4/ digestion. The difference between these two methods found for one sample is attributed to insol… more

Nuclear Track Image Intensifier

Description: "Design and fabrication techniques were improved so that the large area image intensifier now performs well in image intensifier systems for photographing nuclear tracks. Two successful samples meeting most of the objectives were completed and started in circulation among members of the AEC Image Intensifier Committee for evaluation in systems to record nuclear tracks. Except for a reported long decay in the P-15 phosphor performance was quite good. Resolution, gain, and background requirements… more

EGCR Graphite Permeability Tests: Results of Forced Flow Experiments on Egcr Moderator-Grade Graphite

Description: Helium-permeability and porosity were determired at room temperature for specimens from a typical EGCR moderator-grade graphite block. Permeability, at a mean pressure of 2 atm, ranged from 26 to 200 (av. 86.5) millidarcys. Permeability data indicated that turbalent flow was never obtained with helium in these tests and that helium permeating the moderator graphite at EGCR operating conditions (taken to be: 600 deg C; DELTA P, 10 lb/in./sup 2/ per inch of graphite; mean P, 400 lb/in./sup 2/) wa… more
