Fifth Quarterly Progress Report on Fission Product Applications Using Gaseous Beta Sources

Description: "Rates of acetylene polymerization induced by Kr/sup 85/ in d-c fields were up to 15 times greater than those observed when no fields were imposed. Work to determine the relations between acetylene pressure, Kr/sup 85/ concentration, and the field intensity is continuing. In other activities, equipment is being designed to study the effects of megacycle electric fields on radioinduced chemical reactions."

A Recoil Study Of The Reaction C12(p,pn)C11 [formula]

Description: Recoil ranges of C11 from the reaction C12(p,pn)C11 are presented for incident proton energies from 0.25 to 6.2 Gev. From these data it is concluded that a neutron evaporation mechanism cannot be the major mechanism. The result for incident energies of 3 and 6.2 Gev are consistent with a fast reaction consisting of a single inelastic nucleon-nucleon collision. Assuming this mechanism, an average kinetic energy of 19 Mev can be deduced for the struck neutron (before the collision) in the C12 nuc… more

Low Frequency Amplifier IH-130-1

Description: A tranistorized d.c. coupled amplifier having very good gain stability, as well as very low drift of the output d.c. level, has been designed. Low frequency input signals with an amplitude of .04 to 2 volts peak-to-peak, approximately, coming from a low impedance source (voice soil of a speaker system) are amplified to an approximate peak-to-peak amplitude of 4 volts. The output is intended to drive a load of the order of 100 kohm.

Comparison of Radiation-Induced Graft Copolymerization Untilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators

Description: "A brief examination of the post irradiation grafting of machine irradiated polyethylene film with acrylic acid monomer was made. Evidence of postgrafting was detected in samples that had been irradiated to a total dose of 10 Mrads at a dose rate of 0.01 Mrad/sec. and then exposed to a 25% purified acrylic acid solution in benzene for periods of 1 to 4 days."

"Crud" Scrubbing with a Purex-Type Zebra Cartridge

Description: Entrained solids have in the past been one of the major factors limiting solvent extraction fission product decontamination. These solids are known to be surface active, to absorb fission products, and to form interfacial films or "cruds". A major step in eliminating these cruds was taken when the Purex columns were modified to operate with the interfaces at the waste ends of the columns rather than the product ends. This type of operation tended to flush the solids out with the waste rather th… more

High Performance UO2 Program Quarterly Progress Report Number 2: July-September 1961

Description: The primary purpose of this joint USAEC-Euratom program is to obtain a better understanding if the maximum achievable operating characteristics of UO2 as a reactor fuel. During the program work will be performed in two areas that have been of concern to reactor core designers for a long time, namely fission gas release and central melting in fuel rods.

The Radiolysis Of Liquid Isobutane With Pulsed Electrons

Description: Of the saturated hydrocarbons, isobutane represents the simplest case where specificity in radiolytic behavior owing to structural configuration should be apparent. The hydrogen bonded to the tertiary carbon atoms should, on the basis of bond strengths alone, be expected to be more reactive than other hydrogen atoms in the molecule. In order to investigate such specificity, liquid isobutane has been irradiated at 20' and an attempt made to identify and measure all products through the C8 (C<sub… more

A Theoretical Consideration Of Asymmetric Heat Flow At The Interface Of The Dissimilar Metals

Description: Several investigators have found that the resistance to heat transfer at certain metal-metal interfaces is dependent upon the direction of heat flow across these interfaces. This paper shows that such a phenomenon can be explained by application of the theory of heat conduction in the solid state.

Radioactivation Analysis

Description: The development of nuclear reactors and other sources of nuclear particles has provided the analyst with a new method which has been successfully applied to the determination of microgram and even submicrogram quantities of many elements. In this method, known as "radioactivation analysis," the element to be determined is "activated" through some type of nuclear reaction which produces a radioactive isotope of the element. Since the radioisotope produced decays with its own characteristic radia… more
