Response of Dual-Purpose Reinforced-Concrete Mass Shelter

Description: BS>A reinforced-concrete dual-purpose underground parking garage and personnel sheiter designed for a long-duration incident pressure of 40 psi was tested. The sheiter was exposed to shot Priscilla, an approximately 37-kt 700-ft balloon burst (June 24, 1957), at a ground range of 1600 ft (predicted 35-psi peak incident-pressure level). The recorded peak incident pressure at the shelter was approximately 39 psi. Postshot soil borings were made to obtain undisturbed samples for determining soil c… more

Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. Lithium formed zeta alumina, LiAl/sub 5/O/sub 8/. Ph… more

FUEL ELEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR THE PEBBLE BED REACTOR. Final Report

Description: >The basic fuel element consisted of a uniform dispersion of fuel in a 1 1/2 inch diameter graphite sphere. Ceramic coatings for the retention of fission products were studied. It was found-that molecularly deposited'' ceramics such as alumina, siliconized silicon carbide, and pyrolytic carbon were excellent barriers to fission product leakage. The most advantageous location for ceramic coatings was found to be on the individual fuel particles, where the coating was subject to smaller forces an… more

A Mechanism Explaining the Instability of EBR-I, Mark III

Description: Presented at the International Atomic Energy Agencysponsored Seminar on the Physics of Fast and Intermediate Reactors. Vienna, August 3-11, 196l. A feedback model, was developed to account for resonant instabilities in the Mark II core. In this model, the prompt positive power coefficient effect is ascribed to fuel rod bowing and the delayed negative power coefficient effect to thermally lnduced motions in the lower shield plate. Since this model is supported by observations, it is concluded th… more

Fuel Cycle Program, a Boiling Water Reactor Research and Development Program. Third Quarterly Report, January 1961-March 1961

Description: The continuing analysis of the VBWR core resulted in refinements in the calculations for reactivity in voids, flux leakage and resonance escape probability. The Zircaloy cladding for 25 fuel assemblies was received and passed inspection. Preliminary measurements of VBWR flux oscillations, used to develop instrumentation and data interpretation techniques, showed random normally-distributed oscillations with a predominant frequency of 0.5 to 1.0 cycles/second. A model for analog computer simulat… more

Feasibility Study of a New Mass Flow System. Quarterly Report No. 5, June 1, 1961 to August 31, 1961

Description: Activities are reported on development work on a mass flow system capable of measuring externally the properties of homogeneous flow, slurries, highly corrosive fluids, and multi-phase fiuids. In the proposed system, the fluid passes through an S-shaped tube wherein measurements of angular momentum and density yield mass flow directly. (B.O.G.)

SHUTDOWN COOLING TEST. Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant Summary Report

Description: Tests are performed on Pathfinder superheat fuel element mockups, under reactor conditions of 600 psig, in order to determine the parameters influencing heat transfer from the fuel elements to the moderating water under shutdown conditions. The peak temperatures reached by the superheat elements are also found as functions of the heat generation rate. A mathematical model of the heat transfer system is developed. (T.F.H.)

Research and Development Studies on Waste Storage Process

Description: The basic objectives of this program were the determination of the thermal stability of various fission product oxides and nitrates, and an investigation of the gas phase decomposition of ruthenium tetroxide. To accomplish these objectives, a literature survey was flrst made of available physical and chemical data for the oxides and nitrates of Cs, Sr, Ru, Zr, Nb, and Ce. The data were supplemented by a calculation of thermodynamic functions for RuO/sub 4/ vapor from the experimentally determin… more
