REACTOR FUEL WASTE DISPOSAL PROJECT-PERMEABILITY OF ROCK SALT AND CREEP OF UNDERGROUND SALT CAVITIES. Final Report

Description: A study was made of two problems of salt-cavity storage, namely, seepage of wastes out of formations and closure of cavities due to plastic flow of salt. The results indicate that both problems are negligible; bedded salt is more impermeable than dome salt. Kerosene was found to be nonreactive with dome salt whereas brine solutions showed some interaction. It is concluded that storage of radioactive wastes in salt cavities is feasible. (D.L.C.)

Description: The steady-state radial and axial temperature profiles of an E. G. C. R. 5 1/2" O. D. through tube are determined for the test condition of an attemperated fuel assembly operating at 1500 KW in the loop. The profiles are determined for the case of the central control rod fully inserted and bank insertion to 62 inches (Δk = 0.025). The data are presented in the form of tables and curves.

After Shutdown Heating in the HFIR

Description: After shutdown heating rates have been calculated for the target, control plates, and the beryllium reflector of the HFIR. Hilvety previously calculated the after shutdown heating rates in the element and his results are reported in ORNL CP-60-4-110. Description: A chemical flowsheet is proposed for recovery of strontium and rare earths from Purex wastes. The iron in the waste is first complexed with tartrate and the pH is adjusted with caustic. Description: The reference design is an unmoderated, sodium-cooled reactor using a paste fuel of uranium monocarbide in sodium. The core is a cylinder 5 ft in diameter and 5 ft in height. Description: An analytical trajectory and aerothermodynamic analysis of a satellite containing a Task 2 thermoelectric generator was completed. A 300-statute mile circular polar orbit was used for this analysis and the launch was assumed to be from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Prediction of Two-Phase Flow From Mixing Length Theory

Description: It is proposed in this report to describe a new two-phase flow mixing length model. It consists of treating the two-phase system as a continuous medium and applying to it the methods and assumptions so widely accepted in single-phase turbulent flow. Because it reduces a two-phase problem to an equivalent one in single-phase flow, the proposed model can be readily used to predict the effects of flow rate, channel geometry, and channel direction in two-phase flow.
