An Electron Multiplier as a Detector for a Surface Ionization Mass Spectrometer--Design

Description: A description of a 14-stage electron multiplier for use amplifying the detector signals in a surface ionization mass spectrometer is given. The system can either measure the multiplier anode current or count the anode pulses. Pulse counting may be used for- signal currents in the range from lO/sup -13/ to 10/sup -18/ amp. The range of the normal electrometer circuit is extended by the electron multiplier so that it measures currents from l0/sup -10/ to 10/sup -15/ amp with a fast response. (aut… more

Operational Tests of EBWR Vapor Recovery System

Description: A description of the Experimental Boiling Water Reactor vapor-recovery system is given. The seal air operating pressures, temperatures, and moisture content were measured. Air flow through the seals was measured and seal wear was assessed. Assuming direct-cycle D/sub 2/ operation, the seals were evaluated relative to the amount of D/sub 2/ leakage that would be controlled (C.J.G.)

Table of Asymmetric Rotor e2 Transition Probabilities

Description: Tables of gamma-ray transition probabilities predicted by the asymmetric rotor model of even-even nuclei were calculated. Tables are also presented on the coefficients of the rotational wave functions as a function of k, the asymmetry parameter. A third table gives the values of parameters needed to calculate energy levels in the hydrodynamical model using molecular spectroscopy tables. (C.J.G.)

Photoproduction of Calcium-47

Description: The irradiation of highly enriched Ca/sup 48/ CO/sub 3/ with a bremsstrahlung beam of maximum energy 46 Mev produced Ca/sup 47/ with a yield of 1.1 to 3.0 mu c/mg Ca/sup 48/ at half saturation. The half life of a sample measured through aluminum absorber to eliminate the contribution by the Sc/sup 47/ daughter was 4.51 plus or minus 6.02 days. By comparison with the Cu/sup 63/ ( gamma ,n)Cu/sup 62/ reaction the integrated cross section from 0 to 46 Mev for the sum of the reactions Ca/sup 48/( g… more

CREEP AND CORROSION PROPERTIES OF ZIRCALOY-2 IN STEAM AT 750 F

Description: Test equipment to determine the creep properties of Zircaloy-2 in a 750 deg F 500-psi steam atmosphere was designed and constructed. Duplicate tests were performed at stresses to produce failure in approximately 1, 10, 100, and 1000 hr. A comparison between these data and data obtained in vacuum-test equipment showed that a corrosive test atmosphere does not alter ductility or failure times appreciably. (auth)

Performance Characteristics of an Electromagnetic Pump

Description: >The performance characteristics of small linear-induction electromagnetic pumps suitable for high-temperature liquid-metal test-loop operation were examined. Also, methods by which the performance of such pumps may be improved were investigated. The phenomenon of fluid wetting of the pump duct wall and the use of side bars provide powerful tools for improving the linear-induction-pump performance characteristics. Full advantage of the improved performance can be obtained if the hydraulic losse… more

Development of a Fuel-Element Leak-Detection System Based on the Principle of Isotopic Exchange

Description: The selective removal of halide fission products from an aqueous solution by exchange with the halide in a solid silver halide was studied as the basis for a fuel-element leak detector. The retention of fission-product halides on a silver halide column was investigated as a function of coolant flow rate, halide anion, and column size. Fission prcduct decontamination factors and predicted operating lifetimes were obtained for a number of reactor operating conditions. It is concluded that a sensi… more

The Fluorination of Uranium From Dried Solids and Its Application to the Fluoride Volatility Process

Description: The fluorination of uranium from dried solids representative of those obtained from the fluid-bed drying of dissolver solutions of high zirconium alloy fuels. e.g.. Dresden and Army Package Power Reactor fuels, was studied under a variety of conditions. Variables investigated were particle size, additives, temperature, time. hydrofluorination, and pyrolysis. A Proposed Fuel Assay Reactor

Description: There is a need for a special type of nuclear reactor that can test fuel elements nondestructively to determine the total amounts and the distributions of both fissionable and parasitically absorbing materials in completed, unirradiated fuel elements. Such a reactor, called the Fuel Assay Reactor, is proposed. Theoretical considerations are presented to show the reactivity changes that result from the insertion of both fissionable and absorbing material into a central test hole. The choice of m… more

Development of Corrosion-Resistant Alloys for Use as Container Materials for Decladding Solutions or as Welding Alloys

Description: Twenty-four experimental alloys were developed and evaluated as container materials or welding alloys for use with Sulfex and Niflex decladding solutions. Niflex solutions which were more corrosive than Sulfex solutions to most of the experimental alloys, produced severe localized attack on weldments made on vacuum-melted Hastelloy F with the experimental alloys. However, several of the alloys, when self-welded, were not selectively attacked. Some of these showed a substantial improvement in re… more
