EEN-307, Irradiation of units at low temperature test

Description: EWR-ESE-144, Fifty MC-890 type final assemblies were subjected to irradiation at low temperature test in order to determine if irradiation would reduce the frequency of high voltage breakdowns. A control lot of a like number of units was subjected to low temperature test in the same manner except without irradiation.

Analysis of the Moon's Surface by Nuclear Reactions

Description: Introduction. With the imminence of non-destructive landings of small instrumented payloads on the moon, many suggestions are being put forth as to methods of analyzing its surface. It is the purpose of this report to present a body of information which, it is hoped, will be useful in examining the feasibility of an early nuclear experiment to determine the elemental constituents of the lunar surface. The reasons for considering a nuclear approach is that it may be possible to perform an analys… more

The Atomic Photoelectric Effect at High Energies

Description: There has been a revival of interest over the last few years in the theory of the high energy photoelectric effect. this problem has been especially clarified by the work of Pratt. Others have also contributed as will be noted below. In particular these workers have shown that the formula for photoelectric absorption of hard gamma rays by the two K electrons of an atom, which is often quoted in the literature, is too large for heavy elements by a factor amounting to approximately 2 for Pb. It t… more

Automatic Dose Computer for Radiation Film Badges

Description: Technical report. From Abstract: "A combination densitometer and analog computer is described which determines radiation exposure of photographic film used in personnel badges. The range of the instrument is 0 to 300 mr gamma and 0 to 300 mrad beta plus gamma. A novel phototube circuit is used to obtain logarithms directly."

Basis for design scope: Plutonium Reclamation Facility, Z Plant, Project CAC-880

Description: This report discuss the design of the Plutonium Reclamation Facility the capacity of which will be 300 kilograms per month or 3600 kilograms per year or plutonium. The subject facility, as the name implies, must be extremely flexible in its ability to handle a wide variety of feed materials. The new facility will be operating on a three-shift day, five-day week, 40-week year with an overall efficiency of 75 percent; twelve weeks per year will be required for ``turnaround`` time to enable campai… more

Biometric Analysis of a Growth Response of Two Plant Species in a Radioactive Waste Area

Description: Lengths of pistillate inflorescences of sedges (Carex spp.) growing in the contaminated soils of White Oak Lake bed were measured in relation to radiation fields. Carex Frankii Kunth and Carex vulpinoidea Michx. populations were sampled from areas with air dose rates of 0, 10, 20, and 40 mr/hr. Analyses of variance showed that mean lengths of inflorescences of C. vulpinoidea were simllar to each other in these areas but that those of C. Frankii were significantly different. However, the sites d… more

CALCULATED REACTIVITY CHANGES PRODUCED BY THE OSCILLATION OF AN EPITHERMAL NEUTRON ABSORBER IN THE BULK SHIELDING REACTOR

Description: An attempt is made to ascertain the optimum working conditions of a pile oscillator and to compare this method with the danger coefficient technique from the point of view of minimum amount of resonance absorption which can be detected. The space-time behavior of the absorption properties of the sample is described by means of a delta -function and the reactor kinetic equations are obtained by using a single mode expansion of the flux. The results are applied to a bare reactor model equivalent … more

Coextrusion of Powder-Compact Slugs

Description: Technical report. From Abstract: "A process was developed for manufacturing aluminum-clad slugs containing UO2 or ThO2 dispersed in an aluminum matrix. In this process a mixture of the oxide and aluminum powder is cold compacted to form the billet core, which is then coextruded with an aluminum sheath to produce the clad slug."

Conical Refraction in Crystal Optics and Hydromagnetics

Description: When light propagates with the wave normal in the direction of an optic axis of a biaxial crystal, the usual ray theory breaks down. This phenomenon can be analyzed by means of an asymptotic solution of Maxwell's equations. The intensity is governed by a partial differential equation within the phase surfaces, instead of ordinary differential equations along rays. This example slows that light does not always propagate along rays. A similar phenomenon occurs in hydromagnetics.
