State of Matter at High Pressure

Description: Abstract. The region where exact thermodynamic description of the state of matter at high pressure and high temperature is possible is located. In the remaining region various approximate theories and empirical relations are discussed. These considerations are applied to hydrogen to locate the density and pressure at which the diatomic bond collapses. Also the approximate conditions are determined at which no bound electron states exist.

A Study of the Effects of Some Spray Column Variables on Radiant-Heat Transfer in Spray Calcination

Description: Calcination of liquid radioactive wastes, the process of converting metal nitrates and sulfates to oxides by heat, is under development at Hanford as a means of reducing these liquids to a dry powder or solid which can be stored safely. Radiant-heat spray calcination, one of the methods under study, was first investigated at the Oak Ridge K-25 Plant (1) as a possible method of calcining uranyl nitrate to uranium trioxide. The process has also been under extensive development at the Pulp and Pap… more

Completion Report An Automatic Fuel Element Stamping Machine

Description: This document will be concerned with the design, operation and maintenance of an automatic fuel element stamping machine. In order to take advantage of automatic unloading and length checking at the Acme-Gridley lathes in the 313 Building, automatic stamping of fuel elements is desirable. This, along with the need for a permanent canning line identification, resulted in a request for a machine to automatically stamp HAPO fuel elements on a production basis.

Photoproduction Of Neutral Pions As A Function Of Mass Number

Description: The relative yield of neutral photopions from various elements was determined as a function of the quantum limit energy of the Berkeley synchrotron. Single decay photons from neutral pions were observed at 45, 90, and 135 deg to the incident bremsstrahlung in the laboratory system. Mean free paths for neutral pions in nuclear matter were obtained, an optical model prediction of the photopion yields based upon pion-nucleus scattering data was confirmed, and the presence of coherent pion producti… more

On the Establishment of a Temperature Function

Description: Among the thermodynamic variables, which include temperature (T), energy per unit mass (E), volume per unit mass (V), pressure (p), and others any two may be selected as independent, and on this pair will depend, in principle, every other variable, each such relationship constituting an "equation of state". Thus, the common choice of V and T as independent variables implies that E is given by a function E(V,T), p by a function p(V,T), and similarly for the other variables. Occasionally, it is d… more

Evaluation of Aluminum for use in Reactors Cooled by High-Temperature Recirculating Water

Description: aluminum has been considered as a material for cladding fuel elements to be used in reactors cooled by high-temperature recirculating water. Aluminum is abundant, chap, has a relatively low cross section for thermal neutrons, and is readily fabricated into complex shapes. For these reasons, it appears that the use of aluminum rather than steel, Zircaloy or other candidate materials for fuel element cladding, would result in considerable savings in operating expense. The actual economics will of… more

Closed Extensions of the Laplace Operator Determined by a General Class of Boundary Conditions

Description: This paper is concerned with the spectral theory of closed operators in Hilbert space determined by the Laplace operator and certain general boundary conditions. Using the method of J.W. Calkin, we treat the case of a bounded domain in E(m) with C(1,1) boundary, and, in addition, extend the method to cover the case for which the operator L in the boundary condition is not necessarily self-adjoint. It is shown that there exists an appropriate linear close of functions [formula] such that the ope… more
