Estimating Safety Probabilities from Fallout Forecasts for Nevada Test Site

Description: Abstract: "Available data on wind persistence and wind forecasting capability have been applied in estimating the probability of a fallout pattern shifting from an uninhabited safe sector into a populated region. Safety probability is computed from win variability, forecasting accuracy, initial height and particle size of radioactivity landing at a point in the predicted fallout pattern, predicted wind speed, length of forecast period, and safe-sector angular width."

A Study of Nevada Test Site Wind Variability

Description: Abstract: "Wind observations collected at Yucca Flat since 1951 are analyzed for timewise variability. Variability functions of altitude, season, wind speed, and vector wind are described. Derived variability parameters are incorporated into calculations of fallout safety probability for NTS operations."

Comparison of Fallout Doses from Nevada Tests (Revised)

Description: From abstract: Many residents of the Nevada area carried film badge radiation dosimeters during Operation Plumbbob in 1957. Badge readings in specific localities appear to follow the logarithmic-normal distribution.

20-ton HE Cratering Experiments in Desert Alluvium: Final Report, May 1962

Description: From abstract and summary: Project Stagecoach consisted of the detonation of three 40,000-pound charges. Blocks of cast TNT were stacked to resemble a sphere and, the whole center-detonated.

Ignitron Resistance During High-Current Operation

Description: Abstract: "A definition of average conduction resistance for an ignitron is established, and a test bank for determining the value of this resistance is described. Data are reported on four typical ignitron types for several currents in the kiloampere range. Oscillograms are presented to illustrate the change of current with time for a conducting ignitron in a ringing circuit."

Wind Tunnel Study of the Influence of Orifice Geometry and Flow Rates on the Measured Pressure Error of a Static Pressure Probe at Mach 3

Description: Abstract: Tests were conducted in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's 20-inch Supersonic Wind Tunnel to determine the effect of hole-spacing geometry on the measured pressure error due to "breathing" for a pressure-sensing probe at Mach 3.01.

A Confidence Limit Computer

Description: Introduction: Confidence limits as a mathematical tool are applicable to many development engineering and production engineering situations. In order to make confidence limits readily available to engineers, a computer was designed which will approximate certain confidence limits.

A Transistorized Reactivity Measurement System

Description: An all-transistor system has been developed to be used in measuring the reactivity of the reactor in the Sandia Engineering Reactor Facility. In operation, the system triggers a pulsed neutron source (PNS) in the reactor and counts the resulting neutron flux, thus giving a measure of the time constant of the reactor. The counting is done in eleven time-sequenced counting channels. The reactor time constant is a measure of the reactor reactivity.

High Velocity Shock Testing, Equipment and Methods

Description: The need for special high velocity shock testing is pointed out and equipment that has been developed to meet these needs is discussed. The concept of velocity-change and its importance in shock-testing technology is brought out. The three types of equipment discussed are: accelerated drop testers, pneumatic actuators, and air guns. Examples of each type and their capabilities and limitations are presented.
