State of Matter at High Pressure

Description: Abstract. The region where exact thermodynamic description of the state of matter at high pressure and high temperature is possible is located. In the remaining region various approximate theories and empirical relations are discussed. These considerations are applied to hydrogen to locate the density and pressure at which the diatomic bond collapses. Also the approximate conditions are determined at which no bound electron states exist.

Study Of Outage Experience With Selected Boiler And Turbine Generator Units

Description: Because of consideration that is being given to the feasibility of building small nuclear power plants to operate for one to three years with no attention or maintenance it was decided to appraise the degree of reliability that might be anticipated in conventional systems. A preliminary study was made of outages in both common header turbine generator and the unit-type boiler-turbine generator plants. Data from portions of the operating periods for the 187 unit TVA system and the 14 unit ORGDP … more

REDUCTION OF CUPRIC OXIDE BY HYDROGEN. I. FUNDAMENTAL KINETICS

Description: Basic studies of the kinetics of the reduction of copper oxide were made to establish the effect of the solid phase on the over-all reaction kinetics The reaction CuO + H/sub 2/ at the only rea Cu + H/sub 2/O consisted of an induction stage, an acceleration or autocatalytic stage terminating at about 35% reduction of the exide, and a decreasing-rate stage The reduction rates for each stage were dependent on the nature of the initial oxide, the degree of subdivision of the oxide, and the tempera… more

SM-2 REACTOR CORE AND VESSEL REVIEW REPORT FOR PERIOD DECEMBER 15, 1959 TO MARCH 18, 1960

Description: The SM-2 core lifetime was calculated and stuck rod criteria formulated. The control system could shutdown the core under the most adverse conditions with any single rod stuck out. The one-half-inch Eu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ flux supressors adequately supressed the power spike at the bottom of the core. The nuclear effects of increasing the dimensione of the fuel matrix were calculated. A new analysis of various reactivity measuremerts performed durirg the SM-2 critical experiments was made to test the… more

Stability of UO$sub 2$-NaK Slurries. Final Report

Description: The UOsub 2/-NaK system was studied with special reference to the wetting of UO/dub 2/ by NaK and the effect of temperature on the viscosity of the UO/dub 2/-NaK slurry. It was found that UO/sub 2/ powder of approximately 1 micron average particle diameter was wetted by NaK at approximately 400 un. Concent 85% C. No evidence of dewetting or flocculation was noted at temperatures up to 600 un. Concent 85% C, although it was not proved conclusively flocculation does not occur at the higher temper… more

An Improved Nuclear Measuring Principle : Quarterly Progress Report No. 3 Covering the Period from December 1, 1959 to March 1, 1960

Description: This report is the third in a series of quarterly reports discussing the concept and progression of an improved method in nuclear measuring than the usage of the scintillation counter. This report indicates that in a chopped double beam system, commutation of the detector current permits selection of optimum response time and size of radioactive sources.

AN IMPROVED NUCLEAR MEASURING PRINCIPLE. Quarterly Progress Report No. 3 Covering the Period from December 1, 1959 to March 1, 1960

Description: The scintillation counter has proven to be a very valuable research tool, but urfortunately, its ability to meet necessary stability requirements has restricted its use in industrial applications. Several techniques are being investigated which cancel out reasonable variations in detector sensitivity, resulting in improved stability. The general technique consists of alternately measuring the intensity transmitted through the sample and through a calibrated absorber, and difference in intensity… more
