The Determination Thorium Isotopic Ratios by Radiochemical Methods

Description: >A sensitive analytical method was needed to determine the total thorium content and the Th/sup 2//sup 3//sup 0/ isotopic abundance in a number of uranium ore and mill talling samples available in the United States. A procedure was developed using absolute alpha counting to determine Th/sup 2//sup 3//sup 0/ and neutron activation analysis to determine Th/sup 2//sup 3//sup 2/. The method is highly specific with a sensitivity on the order of 10/sup -//sup 1//sup 0/ grams for either isotope and wa… more

RADIATION EFFECTS ON BORON-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS

Description: Elemental boron, boron carbide, and zirconium diboride were irradiated at reactor ambient temperature (150 deg ) and elevated temperatures (500 to 750 deg F) to burnups ranging from 20 to 95 per cent of the boron-10 isotope. Zirconium diboride containing both natural and enriched amounts of boron-10 was evaluated. The amount of helium released during irradiation was measured, and x ray diffraction, metallographic, and chemical examinations were performed before and after irradiation. Zirconium … more
