Resonance Absorption of Neutrons in Thick Sheets of Molybdenum

Description: Several experiments have been performed to determine the effective resonance absorption integral for molybdenum as a function of the thickness of molybdenum sheets. The results have been compared to theoretical predictions to appraise the contribution from unresolved resonances. Electrical System Of The Bevatron Rapid Beam Ejector (Beam Kicker)

Description: A group at the Berkeley Bevatron constructed a rapid beam ejector to produce the brief pulses of particles required for optimum bubble chamber photographs. Energy stored in a capacitor bank is transferred to an air-core magnet surrounding the proton beam of the Bevatron. The protons are displaced from their normal orbit and strike a suitably located target; particles from this target can then emerge from the Bevatron. The Cross Section For Compound-Nucleus Formation In Heavy-Ion-Induced Reactions

Description: With the increasing availability of accelerators capable of producing beams of heavy ions it has become useful to know the cross section for a heavy ion to form a compound nucleus by interaction with a target nucleus. The results of calculations based on two simple models are presented here in order to give some idea of the magnitude of this cross section as a function of the energy of the bombarding particle.

Measurement Of Average Neutron Energies For (o, n) Neutron Sources

Description: A method is presented for measuring the average energy of the neutrons from a source. The attenuation of the neutrons by polyethylene is measured by the use of a long counter in good geometry. The attenuation length is a sensitive function of the neutron energy. The average neutron energies from several (o, n) sources have been measured and agree well with values obtained by other techniques.

Investigation Of Windows And Shields For Neutron Point Sources

Description: An empirical approach for the evaluation of shielding materials for macrochemical manipulations of spontaneously fissioning heavy elements (curium and californium) has revealed interesting comparisons. High-density metal halide solutions were compared with lead glass and with rare earth glass for use as shielding windows. Laminated shields of lead-paraffin and uranium-paraffin were compared with water and with paraffin for shielding walls.

The Satellite Code: A Numerical Satellite Integration Program for the IBM 704

Description: From Introduction: "This report is intended as a handbook for the users of the Satellite code which was developed as a general purpose satellite and space probe program. The components of acceleration, in a three-dimensional rectangular coordinate system, are integrated to produce the velocities and coordinates. These may be transformed into elliptical elements at each time step. The output, therefore, may resemble an integration in the coordinates as well as in the parameters."

Gamma Rays from the Interaction of 14-Mev Neutrons with Beryllium

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the Be-9(n, t')Li-7*-->Li-7 + Y(0.477 Mev) reaction has been measured in the vicinity of 14 Mev by detecting the gamma-rays at scattering angles from 30 to 150 degrees. A time-of-flight technique was used to distinguish the gamma-rays from the high neutron background. The cross section drops from 20 mb at 13.6 Mev to 10 mb at 14.1 Mev and then rises to 30 mb at 14.7 Mev."
