Cost of Containment Features for Boiling Water Reactors for Argonne National Laboratory

Description: An analysis of the cost of containment features for nuclear power plants utilizing boiling water reactors was made. The two plants chosen for comparison were the Experimental Boiling Water Reactor at ANL and a hypothetical large scale nuclear power plant with an electrical capacity of 180 Mw. In order that a cost analysis could be made for the plant designs general arrangement drawings were prepared for each of the alternate arrangements considered.

Criteria for Pre-Startup Environmental Monitoring Programs for Nuclear Sites

Description: A preoperational monitoring program to provide data on the types and amounts of existing radiation, to measure normal variations in the background radiation encountered on the site of a nuclear facility and the surrounding area, and to supply meteorological, geological, and hydrological data appears a necessity. It is desirable for the preoperational monitoring program and study of the meteorological features of the site to cover a considerable period of at least twelve months prior to operatio… more

Some Nuclear Considerations in Fuel Reloading and Control. Technical Memorandum No. 8

Description: The APDA reactor will be operated initially with 92 cents of control reactivity. This will allow 20 cents for temperature over-ride, 30 cents for control margin and 42 cents for fuel burn-out and element growth. There are 6 different reasons for requiring a control margin and 30 cents may not be adequate. Thus, even less than 42 cents may be available for shimming, and careful scheduling of subassembly re placements is necessary. Several possible power and load factor conditions are assumed and… more

Heat Transfer from Spent Fuel and Blanket Subassemblies During Transfer from Reactor to Decay Storage Facility. Technical Memorandum No. 2

Description: During the transfer of spent fuel and blanket subassemblies from the reactor to the decay storage the subassemblies must be moved through an inert gas The heat generation due to the decay of fission is sufficiently large that provisions must be made for cooling the subassembly when in the gas The transfer equipment was designed for conduction radiation and natural convection cooling only. Various steps in the transfer process are explained and computations on heat generation and transfer are gi… more

Radiation Stability of Organic Liquids. Semi-Annual Report No. 1 for 1 January to 30 June 1957

Description: The economic feasibility of nuclear power is enhanced by processes or operations which reduce the inventory of fuel external to the reactor and thereby reduce inventory charges. One method of inventory reduction is a reduction in the "cooling time" between reactor discharge and chemical reprocessing. Current "cooling times" are set, in part, by the ability of the solvents used in processing to withstand reactions and degradations induced by the radiation form "hot" fuels. Preliminary studies we… more

Mechanisms of Surface Adsorption in Homogeneous Reactor Loops. Semi- Annual Report No. 1 for 1 January to 30 June, 1957

Description: Deposits containing fuel, fission products, and corrosion products have been observed in homogeneous reactor loops. These insoluble materials can create several problems: decrease heat transfer efficiencies, obstruct sampling lines, plug heat exchangers, and sensing elements, and may interfere with safe and proper operation of the reactor loops. The final objective of this research is to provide information which will enable the designer and operator of a homogeneous reactor system to (1) estab… more

Numerical Table of Butler-Born Approximation Stripping Cross Sections

Description: The differential cross section in a (d,p) or (d,n) stripping reaction in the Butler-born approximation is reduced to a function of two variations x=qr0 and y=Kr0 where q is the momentum transfer to the nucleus, k is the wave number of the captured nucleon and r0 is the nuclear radius. Cross sections are tabulated for relevant values of x and y for bound and unbound final states for l=0 the l=4.

Further Studies on the Mechanism of Oxidation of Uranium Dioxide

Description: The results of x-ray and density studies of the UO/sub 2/ oxidation products indicate that UO/sub 2/ oxidizes by the immediate formation of a surface gamma -tetragonal U/sub 3/O/sub 7/ phase. This process is controlled by the diffusion of oxygen through the second phase. Analysis of the alpha --UO/sub 2/ lattice parameters demonstrates that the solubility of oxygen in UO/sub 2/ below 300 deg C is less than one atom% per mole of UO/sub 2/. The stability of U/sub 3/ O/sub 7/ and the interpretatio… more

Dynamic n-Measurements on the CEA Magnet Model Mark II under AC and Biased Operation

Description: A method is described to measure dynamic magnetic fields and field gradients to a high accuracy in a strong focusing synchrotron. It employs comparative techniques, peaking strips for timing and an electronic integrator. The method is sensitive down to fields of about 100 gauss. The absolute n-value (field gradient divided by field- is measured to 0.25%, whereas a relative n- distribution over a magnet can be measured to 0.1%. Data are given for CEA magnet Model Mark II between 100 and 4000 gau… more

On the Existences of a Magnetic and Focusing Length in a Synchrotron

Description: Measurements of S and s values indicate that existence of two different effective lengths in the azimuthal direction. We call them equivalent magnetic length and equivalent focusing length respectively. We demonstrate that the first one is the length to be used for the calculation of the radius and the second one in the calculation of the field gradient values. The formulas for the structure of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator are derived on this basis.

Free-Free Gaunt Factors

Description: The hydrogenic (unscreened coulomb) free-free gaunt factors are computed for a wide range of initial energies and photon frequencies. In addition, an average over initial energies with the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is performed to give the temperature-average gaunt factors for use on opacity calculations. The relation between these gaunt factors and the rate of bremsstrahlung energy product is given as is the total energy emitted.
