Aerodynamic characteristics at supersonic speeds of a series of wing-body combinations having cambered wings with an aspect ratio of 3.5 and a taper ratio of 0.2: Effects of sweep angle and thickness ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics in pitch

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel at Mach number 1.60 to determine the effects of sweep and thickness on the longitudinal characteristics of a series of wing-body combinations with cambered wings with an aspect ratio of 3.5 and taper ratio of 0.2. The results show the effects of sweep, thickness, and the horizontal canard surface on the lift, drag, and pitching-moment coefficients and lift-drag ratios. The lift-curve slope, aerodynamic-center loca… more

An Analysis of the Effect of Structural Feedback on the Flutter of a Control Surface Having a Power-Boost System

Description: From Summary: "Such devices as leading- and trailing-edge flaps which are now in use on operational aircraft permit the attainment of maximum airplane lift coefficients, power-off, of the order of 2.8 (reference 1). Airfoil-section maximum lift coefficients as high as 5.5 have been obtained in wind-tunnel tests (see, for example, reference 2), and in a limited flight investigation airplane lift coefficients of 4.2 were obtained (reference 3)."

Component and over-all performance evaluation of an axial-flow turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds numbers

Description: Report presenting an investigation in an altitude test chamber to evaluate the performance of an axial-flow turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds numbers. Reducing the engine inlet Reynolds number resulted in a reduction of corrected air flow and compressor efficiency but did not affect the compressor pressure ratio at a given corrected engine speed.

Corrosion of Stainless Steels by HNO3-HF-AL(NO3)3 Mixtures During Evaporation of Plutonium Product Streams

Description: Corrosion studies on various stainless steels were carried out using aluminum ion as a fluoride complexing agent to minimize corrosive attack on the evaporator. The rate of corrosion of stainless steels during the evaporation of HF-HNO3 mixture is quite high even in the presence of excess aluminum. With two moles of aluminum ion per mole of fluoride ion, the corrosion rate of stainless steel types 329 and 309-Cb was approximately 30 to 40 mils per year. Corrosion rates of other type of stainles… more

Geology of Horse Mesa, Arizona - New Mexico, with Recommendations for Wagon Drilling

Description: Abstract: Horse Mesa is in the Navajo Indian Reservation directly on the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash sandstone which caps the Mesa are fairly widespread and small tonngges have been shipped from two mines. The deposits lie 60 to 75 feet above the base of the Salt Wash formation and possibly trend northwest parallel to ore trends on King Tutt Mesa, a mile northeast. Carnotite and vanoxite are the principal ore minerals. About 6,000 feet of wagon dril… more
