The Rapid Determination of Nitric Acid and Thorium in Thorium Nitrate Solutions

Description: Abstract. The physico-chemical methods of determining nitric acid and thorium nitrate in solutions containing these two materials were investigated. Conductimetric titration with sodium hydroxide can be used to determine nitric acid accurately. the titration of thorium nitrate requires a separate standardization of the base however, since a basic salt is precipitated rather the normal hydroxide. The titration of thorium is reproductible however, so and empirical standardization can be used.… more

Allowable temperature rise in tubes of the piles: Precautions against boiling

Description: In the design of the pile, it was considered advisable never to impose so great a heat load on any tube that the available header pressure would be insufficient to sweep the tube free of vapor if boiling should accidentally be initiated in the tube. Figures are given for the maximum temperature rises permissible, as function of header pressure and orifice diameter.

Recovery of Tuballoy From Solutions Containing Fluoride Ion

Description: "Another extraction method is described herein for the quantitative recovery of tuballoy from solutions containing high concentrations of fluoride ion. The method consists of the addition of aluminum nitrate to the solution in order to complex the fluoride ion, followed by saturation with calcium nitrate and extraction of the tuballoy with dibutyl carbitol.

Effect of Maximum Cruise-Power Operation at Ultra-Lean Mixture and Increased Spark Advance on the Mechanical Condition of Cylinder Components

Description: "A continuous 50-hour test was conducted to determine the effect of maximum cruise-power operation at ultra-lean fuel-air mixture and increased spark advance on the mechanical conditions of cylinder components. The test was conducted on a nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine at the following conditions:brake horsepower, 750; engine speed, 1900 rpm; brake mean effective pressure, 172 pounds per square inch; fuel-air ratio, 0.052; spark advance, 30 deg B.T.C.; and maximum rear-spark-plug-bushin… more

Reduction of Fuel-Vapor Loss by Omitting Some of the Fuel Constituents Normally Lost During Flight

Description: Report discussing an investigation to determine the effect of omitting some of the fuel constituents in AN-F-28 Amendment 2 fuel that are normally lost in flight on fuel-vapor loss. Removing the components was found to decrease the fuel-vapor loss and increase the critical altitudes.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of Four Republic Airfoil Sections from Tests in Langley Two-Dimensional Low-Turbulence Tunnels

Description: "Four airfoils sections, designed by the Republic Aviation Corporation for the root and tip sections of the XF-12 airplane, were tested in the Langley two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnels to obtain their aerodynamic characteristics. Lift characteristics were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 3,000,000, 6,000,000, 9,000,000, and 14,000,000, whereas drag characteristics were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 3,000,000, 6,000,000, and 9,000,000. Pressure distributions were obtained for one of the ro… more
