Blast Biology--a Study of the Primary and Tertiary Effects of Blast in Open Underground Protective Shelters

Description: Dogs, pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice were exposed to nuclear detonatiors in two open underground pantitioned shelters. The shelters were of similar constructions and each was exposed to separate detonations. Each inner chamber filled through its own orifice; thus four separate pressure enviromments were obtained. Blast Loading and Response of Underground Concrete-Arch Protective Structures

Description: Four reinforced-concrete arch structures, with the top of arch crown 4 ft below ground surface, were exposed at high overpressure ranges from Priscilla Burst in order to obtain data on their resistance to blast, radiation, and missile hazards. The four structures received actual air overpressures of 56, 124, and 199 psi and suffered only minor damage, all remaining structurally serviceable. Evaluation of FCDA Family Shelter, Mark I, for Protection Against Nuclear Weapons. Preliminary Report

Description: An underground reinforced-concrete family shelter designed for six persons was tested at three anticipated nuclear blast overpressures: 30, 48, and 65 psi. Fallout Studies and Assessment of Radiological Phenomena. Preliminary Report

Description: Data were obtained to evaluate the attenuation of photons, emitted from a fallout field, due to the surface roughness of the terrain. A study was made to determine the effect of the shot tower on the fallout material. The Internal Environment of Underground Structures Subjected to Nuclear Blast. Ii. Effects on Mice Located in Heavy Concrete Shelters

Description: A cage containing 20 mice was placed in each of 12 underground shelters in an attempt to assess biologically the inside environment of the shelters. Two samples of 20 mice each acted as controls. The structures, of French and German design, were located at ranges between 840 ft and 4320 ft from Ground Zero. Missile Studies With a Biological Target

Description: Fourteen dogs located on the lee side of planted gravel, of a concrete- block wall, and of glass mounted in the open and in houses were exposed to the environmental variations associated with full-scale nuclear detonations. Protection Against Fallout Radiation in a Simple Structure

Description: A reinforced Rutler building was exposed to fallout from Shots Diablo and Shasta, and the resulting dose rates and fallout deposition inside and outside the structure were measured with various instruments and techniques. Remote Radiological Monitoring

Description: A gamma-radiation telemetering system was utilized to measure fall-out levels at the Ncvada Test Site. Two methods of signal transmission were used: directcoupled field lines for on-site installations and commercial telephone lines for areas out to 330 miles. Description: Measurements were made of the velocity and distance of translation of anthropomorphic dummies and equivalent spheres caused by blast winds. The primary technique for recording the movement of these ohjects was phototriangulation. Description: Attempts are reported to obtain records of transient air temperatures at selected locations in a blast biology underground shelter during nuclear explosions. No records were obtained due to failure of equipment. An evaluation of thermal burns was made on Chester White pigs used as test animals.
