Environmental Aspects of the Materials Testing Reactor Operation

Description: The U.S. Weather Bureau and the U.S. Geological Survey have prepared reports for the MTR Site. The Weather Bureau was prepared specifically for the December, 1952 meeting of the Reactor Safeguard Committe and contains the latest theoretical estimates of ground concentrations of stack effluent based on two years of meteorological observations using a tower the same height as the MTR stack. The report of the U.S. Geological Survey was developed from investigations directed primarily toward eval… more

Final Report : Thermodynamic Properties of Biphenyl and the Isomeric Terphenyls

Description: Calorimetric and PVT measurements of pure biphenyl, o-terphenyl, and m-terphenyl were made and utilized to calculate the thermo-dynamic networks of the three fluids from 156° to 1000°F, 235° to 965°F and 290° to 950°F respectively

11th Quarterly Progress Report Organic Coolant Reclamation, 15 December 1961 to 15 March 1962

Description: The solvent distribution reclamation process using 5, 10, 15, 22, 30, 40 and 50 wt % Core II HB in Santovax-OMP has been accomplished. Cost comparisons of several technically feasible reclamation processes, presented in an earlier report, were reevaluated and are tabulated

Reclamation of Polyphenyl Nuclear Reactor Coolant by Solvent Treatment

Description: Laboratory studies were conducted to develop methods to reclaim degraded terphenyl nuclear reactor coolant. A solvent treatment process to reclaim high boiler or spent coolant is described. A preliminary evaluation of the reclamation process is presented. Technical evaluation of products as well as a theoretical analysis of the effects of reclaimed coolant on coolant decomposition rate and make-up rate is reported. A detailed description of all experimental work is also given.

Studies of the Reclamatio of Organic Nuclear Reactor Coolant by Partial Hydrogenation of Polyphenyls

Description: The partial hydrogenation of o-, m-, and p-terphenyl at high temperatures (200-275°C) and pressures (1500-2500 psig) was studied to determine the initial path of the hydrogenation. These model studies were extended to damaged nuclear reactor coolant (high boiler or polyphenyl) in an effort to develop a reclamation process.

Irradiation Loop Studies of Organic Reactor Coolants

Description: Irradiation of Santowax OMP was initiated in the M.I.T. Reactor Organic In-Pile Loop on August 9, 1961 and is continuing. As of September 30, 1961 the total absorbed dose to an average inventory of 5000 grams of coolant was 79,900 watt-hrs. In this same period of time approximately 35% of the terphenyls in the coolant have been degraded.

Final Progress Report on Organic Coolant Technology-Film Formation Studies

Description: Experiments with various fractions from tritium labelled OMRE used coolant show that the oxygen-rich fractions contribute heavily to film formation in the Pyrolytic Capsule Fouling Test (PCFT). These fractions were not necessarily particulate matter or iron laden.

Current Status and Potential of Irradiation to Prevent Potato Sprouting

Description: The present technical status and estimated costs of irradiation to prevent sprouting in potatoes are examined in light of recent developments in the potato industry and in food irradiation. It is concluded that under present market conditions, wide-spread use of irradiation as a sprout inhibitor in the U.S. is not likely.

The Engineering Climatology of the National Reactor Testing Station

Description: This is the second in a series of three climatological reports on the National Reactor Testing Station. This report presents, in a form useful to designers and engineers, data on the following subjects: temperature, mositure content of the air, precipitation, winds, state of the ground, dust and human comfort. The reasons for any significant variations in the observed parameters are discussed.
