Automatic Slug Charger Design Proposal

Description: The charging of NP slugs into the CPM continuous dissolver at a rate corresponding to the maximum plant capacity presents a problem to which no existing separations technology can be directly applied. An automatic charging system is herein described which appears to have potential advantage over present design concepts.

The Climatology of the National Reactor Testing Station

Description: This is the first in a series of three climatological reports on the National Reactor Testing Staton; those that follow will be the Engineering Climatology and Diffusion Climatology. This report is concerned with the general climatology of the area with particular emphasis on temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, snowfall, winds, pressure and special phenomena. The reasons for any significant variations in the observed meteorological parameters are discussed.

Corrosion of Aluminum: Uranium Fuel Assemblies in Storage Basin Water

Description: In the Spring of 1952 it was noticed that spent nuclear materials stored in a canal at the National Testing Station began a severe pitting type of corrosion in the aluminum. This pitting lead to the contamination of the basin water which lead to this study

Current Status and Potential of Irradiation to Prevent Potato Sprouting

Description: The present technical status and estimated costs of irradiation to prevent sprouting in potatoes are examined in light of recent developments in the potato industry and in food irradiation. It is concluded that under present market conditions, wide-spread use of irradiation as a sprout inhibitor in the U.S. is not likely.

Densities and Boiling Points of Uranyl Nitrate-Nitric Acid Solutions

Description: Because of difficulties in controlling intercycle evaporators in the Chemical Processing Plant a series of investigations was begun to measure the boiling points at the elevation of the CPP, and densities near boiling temperatures of a member solutions in the uranyl nitrate-nitric acid water system.

Determination of Radium 226 in Mill Effluents

Description: Recent attempts at the Laboratory in determining radium-226 in effluents from mills engaged in processing uranium ores several significant sources of error were discovered that had not been previously known. In order to make this information available to interested parties at the earliest possible time, a brief description is provided.

Effect of First Cycle Scrub Ration Reduction on Decontamination in the "25" Process

Description: The scrub flow ratio in the first cycle of the Hexone solvent extraction process for the recovery and decontamination of uranium from aluminum-uranium alloy fuels has been reduced by a factor of 10. A minimum flow ration of scrub : feed : extractant of 1: 79 : 67 has been plant-tested. Uranium losses were unaffected, and overall fission product decontamination for three cycles was changed only slighty
