Completion Report An Automatic Fuel Element Stamping Machine

Description: This document will be concerned with the design, operation and maintenance of an automatic fuel element stamping machine. In order to take advantage of automatic unloading and length checking at the Acme-Gridley lathes in the 313 Building, automatic stamping of fuel elements is desirable. This, along with the need for a permanent canning line identification, resulted in a request for a machine to automatically stamp HAPO fuel elements on a production basis.

Variation of Diffusion Length with Sigma-Pile Size

Description: The investigation to be described in this paper was one of several undertaken to resolve a curious discrepancy that had arisen in measurements of the diffusion length of graphite. Those diffusion lengths measured with the graphite layups of 100 Area piles were three to six centimeters higher than the value obtained with the Hanford Standard Pile. The fact that the 100 Area structures of the order of 40 ft. X 40 ft. X 30 ft, not including reflector, approximated an infinite medium, whereas sigm… more

The Flammability of Vapors Above Purex Systems

Description: Among the safety considerations for the Purex plant is the question of flammability limits for the diluent-air system. The present note attempts to delineate the temperature regions of concern by utilizing hydrocarbon flammability data available together with information on the vapor pressures of the systems.

Classification of PuO2 Particles

Description: The Biology Operation, Hanford Laboratories, required plutonium dioxide particles in five different micron and sub-micron size ranges. These were to be supplied as a water suspension in small containers. It was necessary to design equipment, suitable for hood operation, which would give a satisfactory separation of these particles.

Study Report: High Speed Data Acquisition System for PRTR

Description: High speed data handling and computing systems are coming into increasing use in the automatic control of complex industrial processes. One of the next significant developments in reactor design is believed to be the application of high speed data handling and control systems to nuclear reactors. This document is a study of such a system intended for use with the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor.

Exponential Pile Measurements in Water Moderated Lattices with Enriched Uranium Rods

Description: This paper presents the results of a series of buckling measurements involving the use of enriched uranium rods (1.007% by weight U²³⁵) in light water. The effect of replacing a water reflector with one of uranyl nitrate solution of two different concentrations, 536 and 188 grams of U per liter of solution was investigated for the 0.925" rods with the 1.74 H₂O/U-volume ratio in the core. Some information was also obtained on the extrapolation length to be used in unreflected cases. The applicat… more

The Design and Application of A Heat Transfer Analogue for Radially Symmetrical Problems

Description: This report describes the design, construction, and application of an electrical analogue for solution of the steady state problem. Teledeltos paper (an electrically conductive paper) was used to construct this analogue, and although this and other sheet materials has been used for heat transfer analogues in several previous investigations, it is believed that the present work is unique in the application of Teledeltos paper to three dimensional problems of radial symmetry.

Effect of Hanford Pile Effluent Upon Aquatic Invertebrates in the Columbia River

Description: Abstract: "This is the preliminary report of a radiological-ecological survey of the invertebrate fauna that inhabit the Columbia River within the confines of Hanford Works and downstream to the site of McNary Dam. The survey was carried out during the period of October, 1948 through February, 1950. Materials and methods are discussed and the results of extensive radioassays, qualitative and quantitative biological determinations, and hydrographic studies are given and analyzed. Twelve figures … more

Oxygen Removal with Hydrazine- Interim Report

Description: During normal operation the NPR will function as a closed system and the coolant will be maintained at a high degree of purity. Periodically, however, the system will have to be opened for fuel element discharge and/or decontamination. During these periods the reactor will be operated on single pass cooling. The use of deionized and deoxygenated water as the single pass coolant is not economically feasible due to the large quantities of coolant that will be required. At present it appears that… more

Standardization of Calibration Wells

Description: A 500 mg radium source was installed in the completed calibration well and it was then experimentally calibrated by means of ionization chambers. The radiation from the well was compared with the radiation from a standard source in a low-scatter situation. Use of the well brought about a change in the geometry of calibration which was found to result in a small change in the calibration of the high range of the CP.
