Response of Pressure Gauges to Dust-Laden Shock Waves

Description: "A series of shock tube studies demonstrate that two types of pressure gauges respond to dust carried with shock waves by indicating an increase in dynamic pressure. This contribution to the dynamic pressure is approximately the product of the dust density and the square of the dust velocity under the experimental conditions. Besides this information studies give insight into the interaction of a square shock wave with dust when that dust is placed in a plane before and parallel to the shock fr… more

Part A. An X-ray Spectrometer for Use in Radioactivity Measurements, the L X-rays of Neptunium and Plutonium. Part B. Some Lighter Isotopes of Astatine

Description: The following report contains two parts on the analysis of astatine, neptunium and plutonium. Part A discusses a bent crystal focusing X-ray spectrometer that has been designed and built for the observation of the X-and gamma-rays emitted in association with radioactive decay. The instrument uses proportional counter detection and is described, as well as associated electronic circuits. The plutonium L X-rays from Cm-242 and the neptunium L X-rays from Am-241 have been measures. Values of the e… more

Electroplated Metals on Uranium for Aluminum Cladding

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum-clad nickel-plated uranium is corrosion resistant in boiling water. Samples with intentional defects in the aluminum-nickel clodding layers, after testing for more than 300 hr. showed no sign of rapid failure. The study of electroplated metals on uranium for aluminum cladding has defined the effects of several processing variables on the corrosion resistance. The quality of the uranium and the quality of the aluminum-nickel bond were important. Heat treatment and vacuum outg… more

A Study of Location Times for Positions Arranged on a Panel in a Random and an Ordered Manner

Description: The results of an experimental pilot study on the location time, for a sequence of N specified positions on a panel, are given for 1 <_ N <_ 30. The positions to be located were randomly arranged on one set of panels and arranged according to an ordering scheme on a second set of panels. Th location time for N positions randomly arranged on a panel varies approximately as N(2). In the case of an order arrangement the location time is essentially proportional to N. Even for as few as 30 position… more

A Pebble-Bed Reactor for Stationary Power Plants

Description: A preliminary study has been made of a solid homogeneous reactor for stationary power plant application. The core consists of graphite spheres impregnated with uranium and thorium, and the coolant is bismuth. This concept possible offers advantages over other solid fuel reactor systems with respect to simplification of core structure, fuel fabrication and fuel handling, and reduction of fuel inventory external to the reactor. From the results of this preliminary study, it appears that the pot… more

A Report on the Kinematics of High Energy Electron Scattering

Description: "A convenient summary is given of useful formulas on the kinematics of high energy electron scattering together with a derivation of the relevant formulas for transforming from the center of mass to the laboratory system such parameters as scattering cross sections. The formulas derived hold for any two- body collision: the approximation (m = 0) employed for the electron scattering calculations is rigorously true for the elastic scattering of photons."

Calculation of Stagewise Contacting Systems

Description: From abstract: General expressions relating product stream compositions to the operating conditions of countercurrent stagewise extraction columns are derived by an inductive method, and the conversion of the general equations to ones involving the particular case of constant extraction factor is demonstrated.
