Part A. An X-ray Spectrometer for Use in Radioactivity Measurements, the L X-rays of Neptunium and Plutonium. Part B. Some Lighter Isotopes of Astatine

Description: The following report contains two parts on the analysis of astatine, neptunium and plutonium. Part A discusses a bent crystal focusing X-ray spectrometer that has been designed and built for the observation of the X-and gamma-rays emitted in association with radioactive decay. The instrument uses proportional counter detection and is described, as well as associated electronic circuits. The plutonium L X-rays from Cm-242 and the neptunium L X-rays from Am-241 have been measures. Values of the e… more

The Development of a Melting Method for Conversion of Zirconium Sponge to Corrosion Resistant Ingot

Description: This report covers an investigation meant to find the feasibility of producing corrosion resistant zirconium from sponge by special melting techniques. The zirconium metal has certain required specifications, such as: the metal must be free from bafnium, and it must be free from other impurities of undesirable neutron cross section.

Geology of Uranium Deposits--a Condensed Version

Description: From introduction: In an effort to stimulate the search for uranium deposits among professional geologists and mining engineers, the following pages present a brief summary of some of the pertinent facts and ideas concerning the geology of uranium deposits evolved by many individuals who have been actively engaged in uranium exploration. This work has been done by members of the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, geological surveys of several other countries, mining co… more

Investigations of Some Unusual Nuclear Reactions and Study of Double Beta Decay

Description: The acceleration of charged particles in the Berkeley 60-inch and 184-inch cyclotrons has made it possible to study a large variety of nuclear reactions. The characterization of the products from these reactions is done by chemical separations of elemental fractions and subsequent identification of the nuclides formed.

Oak Ridge Static Autoclave Water Decomposition Test

Description: Abstract: "Steady states decomposition product partial pressures of water exposed to an epithermal neutron flux of about 2 x 10-11, at 235F, were 0.4 to 0.65 psi. Recombination studies were made by adding hydrogen and oxygen gases to water under irradiation at different temperature and flux levels. The data show a significant effect of temperature on the rate of pressure drop of the added hydrogen and oxygen. In operating at two flux levels, 1.2 x 10-11 and 2.0 x 10-11, no difference in the rat… more

Ion Exchange Experiments with Polonium

Description: The state of polonium in aqueous solutions was investigated by means of ion exchange equilibrium studies. The distribution of the polonium between the solid and liquid phases was determined for solutions of various compositions using both a cation and an anion exchanges. These studies show that in the absence of a complexing agent polonium is hydrolyzed to such a degree that it forms monovalent cations and anions whose charge was not investigated in this study.
