Description: This brief report demonstrates findings related to the effects of maleic hydrazide (MH) on Paramecium aurelia. Using methods that should reveal lethal chromosomal aberrations occurring in the micronucleus, researchers determine they are unable to demonstrate any deleterious genetic effect of the compound in concentrations non-lethal to the cell. Thiomethyladenosine

Description: The mechanism of thiomethyladenosine accumulation in yeast was studied by attempting to substitute homocysteine methylmercaptane methylmercaptoethanol and methylome captopropionaldehyde for methionine as a specific precursor. Negative results militate against transmethylation as the underlying mechanism. The steady-state solution is shown to predict the existence of sidebands, a mirror signal, and magnetic field inhomogeneity effects. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Project. Progress Report III for 1 September 1951 to 15 March, 1952. Determination of the Accuracy of the Infinitely Repeated Pulse Method and the Observed Effects of Molecular Self Diffusion in Liquids

Description: The range of measurements of nuclear magnetic resonance by the infinitely repeated pulse method is higher than the slow passage method of Bloch. As the measurements approach 10-1 seconds the effect of viscosity or self diffusions becomes important. For liquid hydrocarbons this effect is such as to make the previously measured values for liquid hydrocarbons subject to severe revision. Several possibilities have recently become apparent for making this improvement.

Functions of Aging. Insolubilization of Protein as a Function of Aging. Final Report

Description: Whole-body x irradiation was used to accelerate the onset of senescence in female white rats. Comparisons of nonirradiated and irradiated tissues have been made using histological, physical, and enzyme techniques. The data amassed to date indicate that x irradiation causes a reduction of 20.6 percent in alpha- amino nitrogen liberated by tryptic hydrolysis in liver homogenates. Description: The chemical processing of reactor fuels involves the use of organic substances as extracting agents and as diluents. When most organic substances ae exposed to reactor fuel, radiation damage occurs. Description: The thermal conductivity of heavy water was found to vary from 0.345 at 105 deg F through a maximum of 0.375 at about 265 deg F to 0.371 at 339 deg F. The conductivity was determined by a steady-state method in a cylindrical apparatus having an over-all length of 11.35 inches and a liquid layer about 0.061 inch thick.
