Linearized Three Component Magneto-Hydrodynamics

Description: "A linearized three component MHD theory is given. The three components are two oppositely charged species and a neutral species. Linearized macroscopic equations are presented which in the limit of vanishing magnet field reduce to fluid dynamical equations, and in the limit of vanishing neutral components is frictional. In addition the sound speed that enters is a function of three equilibrium densities. These equations yield a dispersion relation which is tenth order in the wave speed. The d… more

Synergistic Effect of Tri-N-Octylamine on the Solvent Extraction of Thorium by Thenolytricluoroacetone

Description: This technical report seeks to ascertain which amine species cause the synergistic effect exerted by tri-n-octylamine (TNOA) on the solvent extraction of thorium by TTA, the nature of the species formed, and the values of the equilibrium constants involved. This report also includes 2 figures and 2 tables to accompany the findings.

The Brookhaven Chemonuclear in-Pile Test Loop

Description: Technical report outlining the plan to develop the Brookhaven chemonuclear in-pile test loop because the interest in utilizing reactor radiation energy (fission-fragment recoil and neutron-gamma) for production of chemicals has developed to the point where a loop to study chemonuclear system in a reactor under dynamic conditions is necessary.

The Solvent Extraction of Thorium by Thenoyltrifluoroacetone and the Influence of Aqueous Complexation by the Chelating Agent

Description: Technical report investigating the solvent extraction of thorium. The solvent extraction of thorium by the chelating agent, thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA), has proved to be a very effective tool for studying the complex ion chemistry of thorium. This study led to the establishment of the existence of aqueous complexation by the chelating agent.

The Application of Wax Laps to Vibratory Polishers

Description: From introduction: "In this paper the adaptation of the wax lab surface vibratory polisher is described. The wax lap requires little maintenance during the life of the lap. It is not necessary to remove any of the holding devices on the bowl to clean and recondition the lap. The bowl is merely washed out, recharged and placed in operation. The wax lap will not wrinkle or tear, nor is it necessary to change it each day such as the silk or nylon cloths."

A R.F. Vernier Time to Pulse Height Converter

Description: This technical report describes a pulse height converter that employs the R.F. vernier method. This particular converter has been developed for use with the pulsed beam facility of the BNL Van de Graaff. This report then details a number of tests of the converter made using a RIDL model 34-12, 400-channel analyzer. The report includes 6 figures and 4 circuit diagrams to accompany the findings.

Progress in Sintering

Description: From abstract: "Sintering is broadly defined as all aspects of the adhesion, densification, shrinkage, and consolidation which accompanies the reduction in surface energy of a powder compact which occurs upon application of heat and/or pressure. The process of sintering is then further divided into the initiation, material transport, and grain growth-recrystallization stages. A general review is made of each of these stages, noting typical work which has contributed to progress in each area inv… more

Formation Constants of the Complex Species Formed by Interaction of Rare-Earth Nitrilotriacetate Complexes with an Equivalent Amount of Base

Description: From abstract: "The formation constants of the RChOH- species, formed by interaction of individual rare-earth nitrilotriacetate species and KOH at 25°C and an ionic strength of 0.1, have been determined by the potentiometric method, i.e., computed from the pH values of equilibrium mixtures containing varying proportions of rare-earth complex and base. The relationship of these constants to the ion-exchange separation of rare earths at high pH has been discussed."
