Nuclear Track Image Intensifier

Description: "Design and fabrication techniques were improved so that the large area image intensifier now performs well in image intensifier systems for photographing nuclear tracks. Two successful samples meeting most of the objectives were completed and started in circulation among members of the AEC Image Intensifier Committee for evaluation in systems to record nuclear tracks. Except for a reported long decay in the P-15 phosphor performance was quite good. Resolution, gain, and background requirements… more

Recovery of Plutonium From Metallurgical Reduction Residues

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "A semicontinuous process was developed for dissolving the solid residues that are produced in the calcium reduction process for converting plutonium fluoride to plutonium metal. The slag and crucible residues are charged to a column-type dissolver, and are there exposed to a flowing solution of hot nitric acid followed by a nitric acid - aluminum nitrate solution. The resultant solution is suitable as feed for an ion exchange process for recovering plutonium."

The Proton-Proton Triple Scattering Parameters R and A at 213 Mev

Description: "As a part of a program to determine the p-p scattering matrix at 213 Mev, the triple scattering parameters R and A were measured at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80. and 90 deg in the center-of-msss system. The results are compared with a phase shift analysis by MacGregor and Moravcsik and with the predictions of the boundary condition model of Saylor, Bryan and Marshak."

Analysis of Mixtures of Alcohols by Acylation

Description: From abstract: "Recently a general chemical method for the analysis of mixtures of alcohols appeared, using pyridine catalyzed acetylation and second order kinetics to determine the amount of the faster reacting component. The use of 0.25M isobutyric anhydride in pyridine containing 0.0025M perchloric acid as catalyst promotes the rate of the reaction and diminishes the time necessary to perform an analysis. A mathematical treatment of the data and kinetic plot reduces the number of kinetic poi… more

Extrusion of Uranium Tubes

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Several hundred long, thin-walled uranium tubes were extruded to close dimensional tolerance by a potentially low cost fabrication process in commercial facilities. The principal process steps were; forging uranium ingots, machining the forged ingots into billets, and extruding the billets into tubes. Some 750 tubes (maximum dimensions: 3.5 inches in diameter and 15 feet long) were fabricated by this process. Dimensional control was excellent in that 88% of th… more

Fluoroscopic Crystal Investigation

Description: "An investigation was carried out on the possibility of increasing the light output of single crystals by applying an electric field throughout the crystal lattice. Pulses of frequency 2.5 x 10/sup 5/ cps were used with a voltage gradient of 10/sup 4/ volts/cm, and gamma radiation from Cs/sup 1//sup 3// sup 7/ and Co/sup 6//sup 0/ was used to excite the crystals. Tests were run on many types of scintillators. The visible light output was found to be increased by electric pulses for many of the … more

A Hooded and Ion Source With a Magnetic Mirror Feature

Description: "The ion source used for hydrogen and deuterium ions in the variable energy cyclotron at the University of Rochester is of the hooded arc type. For the past year it has been operating with a new feature which has greatly improved its performance. The new feature is a magnetic mirror built into the upper end of the arc hood by a simple insertion of a steel bearing ball 1/8" in diameter. The magnetic field gradient near the ball provides a magnetic mirror action on electrons moving up the arc ch… more

The Sparker, a Divice to Overcome the Multipactor Difficulty in Starting the Oscillator of a Cycloton

Description: "Evacuated electrical oscillating cavities frequently are found to exhibit a strong loading due to electron (or iron) multiplications, the so-called multipactor effect. This effect tends to prevent the buildup of dee voltage in cyclotrons. In conventional cyclotrons driven from external oscillators having their own resonant tank circuits the difficulties are usually slight, but in cyclotrons using a simple dee system as the tank circuit difficulties are encountered in getting the oscillator t… more

Hazards Report for the SM-1 Core II Without Special Components

Description: Abstract: This technical report describes the changes incurred in the SM-1 by the insertion of the SM-1 Core II without special components. The SM-1 Core II components were made to specifications very nearly identical to those of SM-1 Core I. The differences consist of europium absorber sections, internal europium flux suppressors in the control rod fuel elements, and low impurity cladding. Each of the SM-1 Core II components with the exception of the five absorber sections new in SM-1 Core … more

The Effect of Temperature on the Width of a Small-Amplitude, Solitary Wave in a Collision-Free Plasma

Description: "Adlam and Allen and Davis, Lust, and Schluter have studied nonlinear plane-waves, propagating normal to the magnetic field, in a cold plasma. One solution of particular interest is a solitary wave, or single pulse. We present a method for solving the analogous problem for a plasma with finite temperature, in the limiting case where the amplitude of the wave is small and where, consequently, the width of the waver is very large."

Determination of Particle Size Distribution by X-Ray Absorption

Description: "As it is frequently necessary to know the distribution of particle sizes in various products used in industrial applications, a number of means have been devised for these determinations. Some of them include direct microscopic measurement, screening of product, extraction of samples from a settling slurry as with the Andreasen pipette, air and liquid elutriation, adsorption of gases and liquids, and light absorption."

Containment in Cusped Plasma Systems

Description: "A survey of the current theoretical picture of plasma containment in cusped magnetic configurations is presented together with a mention of the points of contact which exist or might soon be made to exist with experiment. A theory of containment was developed which is applicable to the whole range of plasma densities from a tenuous plasma in an essentially vacuum magnetic field to a fully developed plasma which completely excludes the magnetic field from its interior. Also presented are cursor… more

Fifth Quarterly Progress Report on Fission Product Applications Using Gaseous Beta Sources

Description: "Rates of acetylene polymerization induced by Kr/sup 85/ in d-c fields were up to 15 times greater than those observed when no fields were imposed. Work to determine the relations between acetylene pressure, Kr/sup 85/ concentration, and the field intensity is continuing. In other activities, equipment is being designed to study the effects of megacycle electric fields on radioinduced chemical reactions."

Contribution of Neutral Pions to Photon-Proton Scattering

Description: "The correction to photon-photon scattering processes due to the existence of the particles other than electrons is reported. The correction is of the same order in the electric charge as the lowest order term in the perturbation expansion in quantum electrodynamics, although the relevant corrections to the electron-photon and electron-electron scattering are all of higher order."

The Lepton Decay Nodes of Hyperons

Description: "In spite of the present scarcity of experimental data it appears likely that the lepton modes of hyperon decay will eventually become an important source of information concerning strangeness-changing weak interactions. In this paper we use dispersion relations to estimate the effect of intermediate meson states upon the lepton decay modes of hyperons."

Fission Product Activity in SM-1 Core I Primary System and Surface Contamination on SM-1 Type Fuel Elements. Task XVIII, Phases 2 and 3

Description: Abstract; The fission product data obtained during SM-1 Core I operation (June 1957 - May 1960) is reviewed briefly and interpreted. Evidence is presented to indicate that a fuel element defect was responsible for the high fission product activity level observed in the primary coolant. Relative escape coefficients are calculated and the defect size estimated. Anticipated fission product levels during SM-1 Core II and SM-1A Core I operation are estimated from alpha surface contamination data o… more
