Progress letter No. 11 for January 1, 1960 through January 31, 1960

Description: A stainless steel autoclave for superheated water corrosion test was installed and "conditioned". Tests were begun to investigate the feasibility of densifying slip cast stainless steel by means of liquid phase sintering. Attempts to prepare tubular fuel elements by vacuum forming were resumed. Although thick-walled vacuum formed casting have been sintered on the aluminum mandrels without cracking, this has not yet been accomplished with the think sections of interest.

Among the applications described are the preparation of carbon-14- labeled cardiac glycosides, and the biosyinthesis of carbon-14-labeled digitoxin, morphine, colchicine, atropine, podophyllotoxin, and nicotine. The fate and metabolism of many of these drugs were traced. Radiochemical procedures were developed for the synthesis of pure compounds of pharmacological interest labeled with carbon-14, sulfur-35, and trit… more

Progress Report for Period Covering December 17, 1969 - January 15, 1960

Description: As reported in the previous Progress Report (December 16, 1959) a stock solution of Th 230 was prepared from pitchblende. Pulse height analysis of this solution indicated the presence of only Th 230 (93%), Th 227 (5%), Th 232 (1%), and Th 228 (1%). This solution was used to make up synthetic thorium solution of various concentration. These synthetic solutions were analyzed to establish a chemical yield for the procedure. Neither the precision nor the chemical yield of the procedure were conside… more

On the Green's Function for Two-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Waves. II

Description: "As an extension of an earlier paper the Green's function is evaluated for the Lundquist equation linearized about uniform magnetic field, constant matter density, and zero flow velocity. It is assumed that all quantities are functions of two space variables and time only. In the general magnetic field configuration considered here a pure Alfvén disturbance no longer exists; there is instead a wave with properties of both the Alfvén and fast‐slow disturbance."

An Algorithm for Construction Feasible Schedules and Computing Their Schedule Times

Description: "An algorithm for the generation of feasible schedules and the computation of the completion times of the job operations of feasible schedule is presented. Using this algorithm, the distribution of schedule times over the set of feasible schedule—or a subset of feasible schedules—was determined for technological orderings that could occur in a general machine shop. These distributions are found to be approximately normal. Biasing techniques corresponding to “first come first serve,” random choi… more

Some Problems in Linear Graph Theory That Arise in the Analysis of the Sequencing of Jobs Through Machines

Description: "The problems of sequencing jobs through machines are discussed in a linear graph framework. The construction of feasible schedules from given technological orderings is related to the construction of transitive graphs from given component graphs. Methods of constructing transitive graphs are given and bounds on the number of different transitive graphs constructed from given components are determined. A recursive convex function defined on the transitive graphs-the job operation completion tim… more

The Numerical Solution of a Parabolic System of Differential Equations Arising in Shallow Water Theory

Description: "A finite difference approximation to a non-linear set of parabolic differential equations arising in shallow water theory is given. These difference equations were used to determine the shape and rate of propagation of a hum of fluid down a channel of constant depth. The hump of fluid was found to spread instead of steepen, as is the case in the usual shallow water theory."

Theory of Cusped Geometries

Description: "The loss of particles through a cusp of a particular containment geometry utilizing cusped magnetic field lies is considered. A velocity space loss criterion analogous to the loss cone in the mirror machine is derived. The effect of a uniform longitudinal magnetic field perpendicular to the containing field is considered and a loss criterion is derived. The effect of the longitudinal field is to decrease cusp losses.

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit

Description: "We compute the equilibrium configuration of a collision-free plasma contained in an axially symmetric magnetic field. The plasma is characterized by a non-scalar pressure tensor which is obtained from a microscopic distribution function in a form suggested b the guiding center approximation. The solution is calculated in the limit where the ratio of the width to the length of the plasma region and the ratio of the gas to the magnetic pressure are both small. Boundary values at the midplane … more

Utilization of Radiactive Isotpoes in Coal Process Research

Description: "With careful attention to details, tritium assays of satisfactory accuracy have been achieved on low activity standard samples by dry combustion and liquid scintillations counting of the product water. This method is faster, more accurate and dependable than the zinc fusion-ion chamber method fro low level tritium assays. At 380 degrees C, tritium loses from hydrocarbon tracers by isotopic exchange is significant and must be corrected for in tracer measurements at this elevated temperature."

The p-n Cross Sections onf Ti47, V51, Cr52, Co59, and Cu63 from 4 to 6.5 Mov

Description: Absolute (p,n) cross sections have been measured for Ti47, V51, Cr52, Co59, and Cu63 at energies between 4 and 6.5 Mov. These data plus earlier measurements of the cross section for inelastic proton scattering have been used to estimate total proton absorption cross sections for V51 and Co59. An optical model calculation using parameters giving a good fit to elastic scattering measurements predicts an absorption cross section in good agreement with the measurements for Co59. For V51, some sets … more
