Aging of Al-Li Alloys - Part I

Description: Technical report outlining experiments on aluminum-lithium alloys. From Abstract: "Aluminum-lithium alloys are subject to precipitation from solid solution, and may be age hardened by the same techniques used for more common aluminum alloys. Spherical particles of precipitate were observed with the electron microscope in 1.5% and 2.8% Al-Li alloys after aging for times comparable to those required to produce maximum hardness. Rod-shaped particles that were oriented parallel to either the (110) … more

Anodic Precipitation of Tracer Manganese as Dioxide

Description: Quantitative recovery of carrier‐free 10−9 M manganese (II) is possible from weakly acidic solutions. The use of lead dioxide as either a non-isotopic carrier or a chemical displacing agent makes possible high recoveries from more acidic solutions.

An approach to the study of solid state bonding

Description: This report constitutes a review of theory, experimental approach, and means of evaluation involved in the program "An Approach to the Study of Solid State Bonding." Inasmuch as the experimental activity ceased prior to the end of the contract period, adequate data are not available with which to illuminate the area of investigation; therefore, this report should not be considered as a report of a completed project.

Catalytic Combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen in Thoria Slurries

Description: The problem of the catalytic combination of hydrogen and oxygen in a thoria slurry has been approached by determining the effect of variations in treatment of thoria in the calcining step on combination rates. The equipment used to determine the combination rate is described It was found that calcining thoria in contact with platinum metal greatly enhanced the combination rate. The rate was found to be linear with thoria concentration. Results are given for the effect on the combination rate fo… more

The Circular Polarization of Gamma Radiation Following Allowed Beta Transitions

Description: The degree of circular polarization of gamma rays following allowed beta transitions was investigated as a function of the angle THETA /sub beta gamma / between beta-particle momentum and gamma direction and as a function of the energy of the beta particle. The anisotropy of the beta-gamma circular polarization correlation observed for pure Gamow-Teller transitions ( DELTA 1 = 1) is used to determine the validity of C/sub A/' = C/sub A/. The experimental results for Co/sup 60/ and Na/sup 22/ ar… more

The Design and Uses of High Flux Research and Test Reactors

Description: The need for thermal and fast neutron fluxes in the range of 1 to 5 x l0/ sup 15/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/(sec) for the production of heavy elements such as Cf/ sup 252/ and other special isotopes and for improving the quality of beam experiments, reactor materials testing work, and solid state research has led to plans for the construction of three ultra high flux research reactors. The designs of these and other high flux research reactors are based on the general technology of enriched tank-type r… more

Dispersion in Tidal Estuaries

Description: A number of experiments were conducted at Northwestern University with methylene blue tracer to study the influence on the diffusion process of the periodic variations of flow which are characteristic of tidal estuaries. The oscillatory movement of pollutant was also closely studied with an instantaneous injection of radioactive tritium water in the model of the Savannah Harbor. (W.D.M.)

Dispersion of Fluid Flow in Porous Media

Description: This technical report presents the results of an investigation concerned with the phenomenon of dispersion in porous media flow. In the work, major emphasis has been placed on the problem of one-dimensional, longitudinal flow in porous media, from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints. To date, only limited work has been done on the corresponding radial flow problem. The governing differential equation for the dispersion of a fluid transporting a solute as it flows through porous media c… more

Electrochemical Studies of Hafnium, Zirconium, and Yttrium

Description: Eighth Quarterly Progress Report from the period of April 1, 1959 to June 30, 1959. Electrorefining studies have been seriously hampered during the past quarter due to recurrent air leaks into the refining cells and also due to a lack of hafnium metal for anode material.

Electron Diffraction Study of the Removal and Formation in Vacuo of Oxide Films on Uranium and Plutonium

Description: Experiments and the development of apparatus relating to the preparation of an oxide-free surface on uranium are described. Polishing the metal in vacuo of the order of 10^-7 an Hg appears to be the most successful method. UH3 and UO2 are observed to form rapidly on the metal in such a vacuum PuO2 was found to form on plutonium in vacuo at pressures less than one micros. The possibility that plutonium hydride also formed could not be investigated because of the similarity in crystal structure a… more

A Fast Hyperfragment Produced by a Heavy Primary Cosmic Ray

Description: The order of magnitude of the non-mesonic to mesonic ratio has been measured for several species of hyper- fragments. With this ratio as well as the branching ratio of the mesonic decays and a determination of the lifetime, it is possible to find the partial decay rates of the various modes. This decay rate should throw light on the influence of nucleons on the strangeness violation in the decay. The effect should be greater for heavy hyperfragments. The difficulty in attempts to measure lifet… more

A Feasibility Study of Optically Regenerative Light Intensifier

Description: The contract was a study program to determine the feasibility of a high-gain optically-regenerative image tube. More specifically, it was a feasibility study of a close-spaced image tube which would utilize a fotoform grid to break the electron image into many independent elements. Use of the fotoform grid permits various high-gain modes of operation as the gain of the multiple-element image can be controlled or gated by the potential applied to the grid.

Final Report on Beta Radiation on Inducing Skin Tumors

Description: This program was begun to investigate the possibility that dosages of beta radiation below those known to indue tumors in the skin might result in a "latent tumor" change. In experiments with chemical carcinogens it had previously been observed that dosages well below those necessary to induce tumors in the skin could "imitate"carcinogenesis and that such latent tumor cells could be transformed into tumors by continued application of the promoting agent croton oil.

Foliar Absorption of Mineral Nutrients with Special Reference to the Use of Radioisotopes and the "Leaf Washing Technique"

Description: Foliar absorption rates for radiophosphorus and calcium in the bean plant were determined by washing from the surface of the leaf, at intervals after treatment, the non-absorbed residue. The nature of the washing solution and the presence of moisture on the leaf surface on radiophosphorus uptake, and the effects of pH on calcium absorptions were also determined.

Description: First status report for the period June 15, 1958 to March 1, 1959. The immediate objective of the present investigation was to clarify the role of the grain boundary in the creep process by direct observation of grain boundary sliding in ceramic bi-crystals. The first phase pf the study has the obtaining of bi-crystals of MgO, AI2O3 and NaCI.

Gamma Decay of the [Mu]-Meson

Description: The transition rate for decay has been calculated by several authors under the assumption that the process goes via a charged intermediate vector Boson X, which is coupled to pairs. Our conclusion is that one cannot rule out the possibility the decay goes via a charged vector Boson of very high mass, and if the Boson should happen to have an anomalous moment near 0.7, its mass could be relatively small without contradicting the experimental data.
