Geophysical Seismic Evaluation Study at Hanford

Description: From introduction: "In June, 1963, a geophysical research program was conducted at Hanford to determine the feasibility and desirability of using seismic methods in geohydrologic studies. Detection and delineation were desired of seven different geological features that in some sites affect the movement of liquid radioactive wastes discharged to the ground."

A Review of Supercritical Fluid Extraction

Description: Forward: The purpose of this report is to summarize the results obtained from a brief investigation of supercritical fluid extraction principles and applications. This study was one portion of a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, contract nuriber DE-AI01076PR06010, in response to a preliminary proposal submitted by the authors. This report sometimes uses company trade naries to identify processes and patent holders. This usage implies no endorsement by HBS… more

Finline Diode Six-Port: Fundamentals and Design Information

Description: Abstract: The preliminary design and testing of a planar circuit six-port with diode detectors is described. The planar circuit medium was chosen to be finline, and all preliminary work was done in WR-42 waveguide (18-26.5 GHz). The finline substrate was alumina, and initially commercial beam-lead diodes were bonded to the finline metalization. The goal is to design an integrated circuit which could be fabricated on one chip (with diode detectors) and used as part of a six port network analyzer… more

Tetragonal Structure of Indium

Description: It is shown that the tetragonal stricter of indium may be accounted for on the basis of the electron theory of metals by demonstrating that, with suitable assumptions concerning effective masses of overlap electrons and other parameters, the total energy of the metal crystal is less for the observe red c/a ratio that for a c/a ration of unity, volume being preserved in the change of c/a ratio. No increase in the energy is found with further increases in c/a ratio. The effect of holes in the fir… more

Collection and Analysis of Radioactive Material from Sibley Quarry

Description: Samples of various media were collected at several points in southwestern Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario during 1958 and analyzed for radioactivity as part of a general pre-operational radiological survey of the environment of the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Reactor. Media sampled included earth, dust, rain, surface water, underground water, surface sediment, benthos, fish, vegetation, and mammals. Data provide an indication of the existing levels of radioactivity present in environmental media in … more

Heat Exchanger Design Charts

Description: From introduction: "The ORNL-ANP liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger design and development effort has been based on an exceptionally high performance matrix of closely-spaced small diameter tubes that permits practically pure counter-flow operation. In the course of full-scale aircraft power plant design work a number of charts for this type of heat exchanger has been prepared. These charts were intended in part to show the effects of the various parameters in a readily understandable form, and in… more

A Preliminary Survey of Radioactive Constituents in Rainwater at ORNL

Description: Technical report surveying radio-chemical analyses by ORNL's Analytical Chemistry Division and Health-Physics Division of large volumes of rainwater for plutonium, uranium, and fission products. Overall, carrying efficiencies for Al(OH)3 scavenging of rainwater were determined for these elements, as well as for Pu and U. [From Abstract, Introduction]

The Corrosion of Miniature Fuel Plates in Simulated Reactor Cooling Water

Description: Technical report issued as one of a series of reports concerned with corrosion studies for the Materials Resting Reactor, created to both determine the effect of various practices for fuel plate fabrication on corrosion resistance and to determine the extent of penetration of the fuel plates by localized corrosion attack.
