Grain Growth of UO2. Part I

Description: Abstract: (1) Grain growth in UO2 pellets was studies between 100 C and 2600 C. The pellets were encapsulated in small vacuum-tight tungsten containers in an argon atmosphere. (2) The grain size-time relationship could be expressed by an equation. A low exponent, m>_ 1/3, was found in those experiments and is related to the type of UO2 investigated. An activation energy of 65 kcal/mole was obtained for the grain growth process. The time exponent, m, increased with increasing temperature if the … more

Heat Generation in Thermal Shields

Description: "Heat production resulting from the absorption of gamma ray photons in thermal shields and the leakage of neutrons and photons from ferritic thermal shields are investigated. The gamma rays considered arise from three types of reactor radiation -- thermal neutrons, fast neutrons, and core and reflector gammas. The energy spectra of the fast neutron leakage and absorption have been investigated in some detail because of the significant contribution of fast neutrons to the heating of the concre… more

Progress Report on Waste Concentration Studies: Engineering Results on the BNL Semi-Works Vapor Filtration Vapor Compression Evaporator

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing progress of waste concentration studies. As stated in the introduction, "the present report covers all experimental hot runs up to the time the still was turned over to the Waste Control Section for intermediate handling of laboratory D waste" (p. 1). This report includes tables, illustrations, and photographs.

In-Pile Loop Corrosion Experiments with Uranyl Sulfate Solutions at 235 and 250 C

Description: Report presenting in-pile loop experiments DD, EE, FF, GG, L-412, L-413, and L-418, which were seven of a series designed to test the radiation corrosion of zirconium, titanium, and stainless steel alloys in solutions under various conditions of radiation intensity, temperature, solution composition, and velocity of flow. Steel specimens exposed in the loop cores showed increases in corrosive attack over that expected out-of-radiation.

The Charge on Uranium(VI) in Acid Solution

Description: Abstract. The distribution coefficient of U(VI) between perchloric acid solutions and benzene solutions of TTA has been measured as a function of the acidity. It was possible to interpret the data in terms of the charge on the U(VI) species present in the aqueous phase. The experiments indicate that U(VI) exists as an ion charge +2 at acidities from 0.1M to 2.5M. In the interpretations of the distribution data, it was necessary to know the acidity coefficient of the uranyl chelate in the ben… more

Crystal Structures of Some Uranium Compounds : a Summary from the Ames Laboratory

Description: Introduction. Some forty different uranium compounds have now been given diffraction study at Ames. Reports of these investigations are scattered in the Project literature; many have been reported in a sentence or two as a note along with chemical or metallographic reports. To make the results of this crystal structure work more available this summary of the Ames work has been compiled. (A similar summary has already been published from the Chicago laboratory.)

Note on the Non-Linear Kinetics of Circulating-Fuel Reactors

Description: The following report analyzes equations of motion for somewhat idealized circulating-fuel reactor that have been previously discussed, specifically the assumptions that the instantaneous power density is constant along the length of the fuel tubes, that the excess radioactivity depends only upon the average fuel temperature, and that the fuel temperature at the inlet is kept constant.

Electrolytic Production of Uranium from Solutions of its Tribromide in Fused Salts

Description: Abstract. the electrodeposition of uranium metal, in the form of tree-like deposits, from molten strontium halide baths is described. Under the best conditions studied, approximately 40% recovery is attained. Freedom from side-reactions of the reduced uranium with anode products and/or refractory materials, and high cathode current densities appear to be essential to the success of the process. the refining of uranium under similar conditions appears to occur quite readily, with approximatel… more
