Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

Description: The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.

Zone Refining and Chemical Analysis of KCI and KBr Progress Report

Description: Upon initiation of our alkali halide purification program, we desired an accurate and complete chemical analysis of representative samples of the best salt commercially available. It was concluded that the most sensitive and probably most nearly complete technique is that provided by neutron activation.

K [infinity] in Uranium - Water Lattices

Description: This report follows experiments on K[infinity], measuring the element for several red sizes, enrichments, and water-to-uranium volume ratios-(1, 2), by making use of the relation k[infinity] = 0M-[2]B-[2] (M-2 = migration area, B = buckling). The purpose of this report is to compare the experimental data for k[infinity] with values calculated from the four-factor formula k[infinity] = [eta][epsilon]pf.

Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor Experiment: Quarterly Technical Report No. 1, BAW-1001, July 1, 1956 to November 15, 1956

Description: This is the first quarterly report which summarizes the project work on the Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor Experiment. As the initial contract was not signed until November, 1956, progress within this reporting period has been limited to establishing objectives, determining what research and development will be required, and selecting preliminary design parameters.

A Regulated Power Supply for a High Current Magnet

Description: Current regulation of a Bitter type electromagnet powered by a 10 kw. motor-generator set has been achieved by control of the generator exciting field. An error signal, obtained by comparing the voltage drop across a series resistor in the magnet circuit with a reference voltage, is fed back with appropriate amplification to the grids of series tubes in the generator field supply. Magnetic fields from 400 gauss to 10 kilogauss in a fixed gap (1.5 in. width and 3.5 in. diameter) are obtainable w… more

HASL Aerial Survey System

Description: Radioactive debris from nuclear detonations may fall out over an extensive area. A rapid evaluation of the distribution of such surface contamination cam be obtained by an aircraft mounted detector. The gamma field measured in the aircraft can be related to the intensity on the ground. The HASL Top Hat'' system measures the radiation intensity, in an aircraft, at any altitude up to 1500 feet. The data are continuously compensated to the reading that would be obtained if the measurements were ta… more

Supplement No. 1. Projections of Costs, 1959-1975 for Nuclear-Conventional Power Plant Cost Study. Conventional Coal Fired Power Plants : 25,000 KW to 325,000 KW for Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, Illinois

Description: In order to establish a basis for comparing the estimated cost of nuclear power plant designs, a set of general and detailed design considerations for conventional coal-fired power plants was established. Five preliminary designs of conventional coal-fired power plants ranging in size from 25to 325 mw were selected, and cost estimates were prepared. Supplement 1 shows a year by year projection of costs for the period 1959-1975.
