Chemical Research -- U233 Production and Extraction; Report for the Month Ending June 21, 1943

Description: Abstract. The precipitation of Pa233 with MnO2 from a solution of thorium nitrate has been studied in some detail and seems quite satisfactory up to 36 gm Th(HO3)4 4H2O per 100 cc solution. The concentration of Pa233 with respect to the manganese dioxide carrier and the thorium precipitated with the carrier appears to be accomplished quite well by either a series of MnO2 cycles or thorium iodate cycles. Volatility methods for both the separation of Pa233 from the original thorium and for its … more

A Colorimetric Method

Description: From abstract: "This paper gives a method for determining Uranium using sodium cresotate as a colorimetric reagent. A precision is obtained of better than 2%. In carrying out analyses for Uranium in corrosion products by existing methods such as ignition to the oxide, silver reductor, or titration with ceric sulfate, it became apparent that a rapid, fairly accurate method for determining uranyl ion would be of great value. Such a method is described in this paper. The most logical color to use … more

Analysis of Uranium-Nicked Alloys

Description: Abstract. Methods for determination of both uranium and nickel in solutions of these metals are described. Alloys can be dissolved in nitric acid treated with citric acid to complex the uranium, and the nickel precipitated as nicked dimethylglyoxime. The uranium is reduced and titrated with standard ceric sulfate. These methods are for the determination of macro amounts of uranium and nickel with errors on the order of 0.1%.

100-Ton Test : Measurement of the Velocity of Sound

Description: Abstract: The velocity of sound at the time of 100-ton shot at Trinity was measured to be 1116.1 ft/sec. Values of blast pressure computed from the excess velocity are given, but are not considered as reliable.

The Solubility of Helium in Tuballoy

Description: This technical report summarizes the work done in attempting to determine the solubility of helium in tuballoy. In general, the method used has been to allow the tuballoy to stand in contact with helium at one atmosphere presume at a fixed temperature for an extended period, then to pump off the excess helium to a low pressure in as short a time as possible (10-6 mm of Hg or less). The system was then closed off and the pressure increase was measured by a suitable gauge as a function of time.… more

Composition and Thermal Decomposition of Uranyl Peroxide

Description: Technical report on the studies that have been made on the composition and thermal decomposition of uranyl peroxide. The conditions of precipitation and drying have been found to have no appreciable effect on the composition of the compound, but do affect the physical appearance of the precipitate and the rate of thermal decomposition. The UO4 + 2H2O appears to be thermodynamically unstable with respect to UO3 at 25 degrees C and atmospheric pressure, although the rate of conversion is extreme… more

Pyrohydrolysis in the Analysis of Fluorides and Other Halides

Description: Abstract. Fluorides and other halides are hydrolyzed completely by passing a rapid stream of superheated steam over the sample near 1000 degrees C in a specially designed platinum reaction tube. The steam and hydrogen halide are condensed by cooling, and the resulting distillate titrated with standard sodium hydroxide solution. The fluorides and chlorides of the light metals, hitherto thought of as very difficult to hydrolyze, are mixed with U3O8, or other metallic oxides, which reacts with … more

The Geochemistry of Columbium and Tantalum

Description: From abstract: "This is a review, with annotated bibliography, of the mode of occurrence of the elements columbium and tantalum. It is not a list of specific ore deposits, but a summary of the types of minerals and rocks in which these elements have been reported to occur. In addition, the unpublished spectrographic studies of the Geological Survey are summarized, best sources for columbium and tantalum are indicated, and suggestions are made for further investigation."

It is not a list of specific ore deposits, but a summary of the types of minerals and rocks in which indium has been reported to occur. In addition, the unpublished spectrographic studies of the Geological Survey on mill and smelter products are summarized, best sources of indium are indicated, and suggestions are made for further investigations. Some Studies of the Reactions of Uranium Oxides with Hydrogen, Oxygen and Water

Description: Abstract: The purpose of this research was to obtain data that would be useful in predicting changes that might be expected to occur in the oxidation state and degree of hydration of powdered uranium oxides maintained for long periods of time at temperatures between 30 and 300 degrees C. in the presence of excess water, hydrogen, oxygen and possibly hydrogen peroxide. The reaction of hydrogen and oxygen with water slurries of U3O8 were studied at 100-300 degree C.

High Temperature Refractories for Uranium

Description: Abstract: "Experiments are described wherein uranium metal was heated in ten different refractory materials under conditions approximating those of the uranium J. The refractory crucibles containing the uranium were placed in graphite crucibles and heated in vacuum for four hours at 1800-1850 C by means of an induction furnace. MgO, W, and TiH were found to be unacceptable containers for uranium at these temperatures. BeO, ThO2 and Un showed some reaction with the uranium, whereas UO2, ZrH, CeS… more

A Mass Spectrograph for the Analysis of Fission Product Mixtures

Description: From introduction: "The analysis of mixtures of fission products with a mass spectrograph offers certain advantages. A chemical separation of the fission products found in the solution at Hanford is not necessary with the mass spectrograph technique. A sample of the mixtures can be placed on the sample holder and then the sample holder is mounted in the mass spectrograph. This reduces the amount of handling of the active solutions to one relatively simple and short operation. The health hazards… more
