Resolution of a Scintilation Counter Spectrometer

Description: We have been using a NaI (T1) crystal, 1 1/2 inches in diameter and 3/8 inches high in conjunction with a 5819 photomultiplier. The crystal is packaged according to the method described by Swank and Rosnich. The pulses are analyzed in a very stable twenty-channel pulse height discriminator.

Vorticity Heat Transfer in Molten Metals

Description: The transfer of heat is assumed analogous to the transfer of vorticity for turbulent fluid flow in a long straight pipe. Nussalt numbers are found and compared with other theoretical and experimental information. A simple and purely experimental velocity profile equation providing good correspondence with experimental information down to the laminar multilayer is also found.

An Investigation of the Mineralogy and Petrography of Uranium-Bearing Shales

Description: X-ray and microscopic examinations were made of samples of the Chattanooga shale, Maury shale, and Brassfield shale collected in Tennessee. A fresh sample obtained from the Oak Ridge Laboratory (Caney Fork 9-1) and a series of six samples, collected in southeast Tennessee, ranging from the Maury shale to the Brassfield shale were selected for a detailed study.

The Isotope Effect. III, the Reaction of Acetone-1-C14 With Alkaline Hypoiodite

Description: A small but real isotope effect was found when acetone-1-C14 was treated with alkaline hypoiodites; the iodeform contained more than half and the acetate less than half of the activity of7 the original acetone. The effect is in the opposite direction from most of the other isotope effects so far reported, the C12-C14 bond apparently being more easily broken than the C12-C12 in this case. The magnitude of the effect is of the order of 3 to 6%.

Sensitive Leak Control

Description: A simple device has been designed for controlling the leak into a gas x-ray tube. This leak control is a modification of the one used on the Wyland gas tube in which the control is accomplished by varying the pressure applied to a series of alternate rubber and metal washers, approximately six of each. Each washer has a central hole which permits gas to leak between the washers into the evacuated chamber.

Sodium-Air Accident Study for a Sodium Cooled Reactor. Technical Memorandum No. 20

Description: The design requirements of a containment building for a sodium-cooled reactor have been investigated from the point of view of a hypothetical sodium - air reaction. In particular, this study was directed toward the containment building of the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant. The hypothetical accident assumes a major leak in the sodium system with a concurrent or earlier failure of the ventilation and cooling systems which allows air to enter the areas around the sodium system which are normally… more
