Investigation of the Effects of Fabrication Variables on the Corrosion Resistance of Zircaloy-2

Description: An investigation was conducted of the effect of melting and fabrication variables on the corrosion of Zircaloy-2 in 750 deg F steam at 1500 psi. Two 12 in. diameter production-type ingots and three 4 in. diameter laboratory type ingots were produced representing primary and secondary melting in 75% Helium--25% Argon atmosphere, primary melting in 75% Helium-25% Argon and secondary melting in vacuum, and primary and secondary melting in vacuum. Variations were performed in the ingot forging proc… more

Isotopic Sources of Secondary Radiation : Interim Technical Report Covering the Period from June 15, 1958 to March 1, 1959

Description: During the first eight months of this program the emphasis has been places on experiments and calculations on the x-ray target configurations and materials. We have found, by extending the experimental information using Pm147, Kr85, and Sr90-Y90, as well as by developing the theoretical x-ray production for these sources, the approximate conditions under which isotopic sources will emit nearly monochromatic x-rays suitable for gaging and radiographic application in the 10 to 100 Kev photon ener… more

Periodic Radiation Survey. Section II. First Performance. Test Results DL-S-231, T-612394

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the radiation level in the Turbine-Governor Service Building, around the Fuel Handling Canal and in the limited access areas of the reactor plant containers during plant operation. All radiation levels were background level readings except for a few points above background located in the walkway areas going from the auxiliary chamber into the reactor chamber, boiler chamber and pressurizer compartment. The only neutrons detected were slow neutrons in th… more

Grain-Boundary Energies in Gold-Copper Alloys. Report No. 35

Description: The ratio of grain-boundary to surface energy has been determined as a function of composition in the gold-copper system. From interferometric measurements of the boundary groove angles in specimens thermally etched at 850°C, the following average grain-boundary to surface-energy ratios were obtained: 0.25, 0.28, 0.34, 0.42, 0.37, and 0.36 at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 at. % copper, respectively. Existing data for the surface energies yield 370, 320, 310, 390, 430 and 590 erg cm−2, respectively… more

Thorium Bismuthide : Ultrasonic Control of Crystal Size

Description: Thorium bismuthide when crystallized from a solution i bismuth results in large platelets which may be as large a 1 centimeter in diameter. A slurry of these platelets is difficult to pump through pipe lines and filters. The particle size can be reduced by (1) very rapid cooing (approximately 1000 degree C per second) or (2) ultrasonic treatment. The latter, much easier to attain in large scale, gives equiaxed particles of thorium bismuthide.

RAYPAC : a Special-Purpose Analog Computer

Description: As an aid in forecasting possible blast damage in areas distant from a bomb burst point, a special-purpose electronic analog computer has been developed. Sound ray paths (orthogonal trajectories to sound wave front) are computed as a function of meteorological conditions.

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956

Description: The kinetics of transformation of zirconium binary alloys is being pursued. Mechanical property variation as a function of transformation if also being investigated. Zirconium-tin and zirconium-titanium alloys transform very rapidly when quenched from the beta field. These alloys have, generally speaking, been demonstrated to be not amenable to heat treatment in the normal sense of the word. Eutectoid alloys, principally zirconium-molybdenum alloys, have shown a definite response to heat treatm… more

The Lindemann and Grüneisen Laws

Description: The Lindemann assumption of direct contact of neighboring atoms at fusion is replaced by the criterion that melting occurs when the root-mean-square amplitude of thermal vibration reaches a critical fraction ρ, presumed the same for all isotropic monatomic solids, of the distance of separation of nearest-neighbor atoms. The Debye-Waller theory of the temperature dependence of the intensity of Bragg reflection of x-rays is used, without further assumptions, to derive a generalized Lindemann law… more

Preliminary Leaching Tests for the Extraction of Uranium From Various Monticello Stockpile Ores

Description: In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

Recovery of Manganese Dioxide From Rand Barren Solutions

Description: In the course of recovering uranium from Rand cyanide residues, large volumes of barren acid liquors are produced. With the flowsheets now under consideration it is not advisable to recycle such liquors and they are to be discarded. Consideration was given to the removal of manganese under conditions that would permit its recovery as MnO2.
