A New Sample Mounting Mechanism and Associated Equipment for Use With the 1.25 Mev Van de Graaff Generator

Description: The 1.25 Mev Van de Graaff Accelerator installed in the Chemistry Building at the Argonne National Laboratory is the vertical type and is frequently used for electron irradiation of various types of samples. A new sample mounting mechanism was developed which has greatly facilitated the over-all operation of the generator.

The Fundamental Mechanisms for the Decomposition of Organic Molecules by Metal-Photosensitization and Other Collisions of the Second Kind: Progress Report for the Period July 1, 1949 to February 28, 1950

Description: The mechanisms of the decomposition of various cycloparaffins by electronically excited mercury atoms are being studied. The investigation on cyclopentane has been completed; the investigations on cyclopropane, methylcyclopentane, and cyclohexane are being continued. In addition cyclobutane is being synthesized to permit the study of its decomposition by the atoms.

Special Report of Problem on AEC Contract AT(30-1)-1024: Measurement of the Dielectric Constant of Molten Slag

Description: Two methods of measuring the dielectric constant of molten slag are described and investigated. The conventional standing wave method is shown to be impractical for the range of conductivities expected. The second method utilizes the attenuation of the electromagnetic energy as it propagates into the slag.This method appears to offer a reasonable chance of success if extreme accuracy is not expected. It suffers from the limitation that the conductivity must be known from some other source.

The Fundamental Mechanisms for the Decomposition of Organic Molecules by Metal-Photosensitization and Other Collisions of the Second Kind: Progress Report and Renewal Proposal

Description: One major problem pursued under the present contract is the elucidation of the general mechanism for the decomposition of the cycloparaffins by photo-excited mercury atoms. Additionally several new areas under investigation are a program on nitrogen-containing compounds, a program on reactions initiated by high energy states of mercury atoms, and a program on isotope separation by metal-photosensitization.

The Hot Atom Chemistry of the Propyl Bromides

Description: The purpose of this study is to make a detailed investigation with the object of clarifying certain points and extending the present theory of the hot atom re-entry process. The propyl bromides were selected for study because of their moderate stability and ease of separation of possible re-entry products, while at the same time they retain the possibility of isonerization.

Correlation of Some Pennsylvanian Limestones of the Mid-Continent by Thermoluminescence: Final Report

Description: Thermoluminescence and related studies were made on 25 different limestones of Pennsylvanian age. Each limestone was studied to determine the relative lateral persistence of its thermoluminescence characteristics. In addition thermoluminescence variations in vertical sections were examined to determine the possibility of establishing zonations based on thermoluminescence.
