Distribution of Radium Between Crystals and Solution of Sparingly Soluble Salts

Description: Earlier investigations have established that distribution of radioactive elements between crystals and solution of isomorphous salts occurs when the composition of both phases remains contact and true equilibrium is established between the solid and liquid phases. The applicability has been demonstrated on a series of salts, but experimental data has pertained only to soluble salts. The artlcle checks the relations experimentally for the case of sparingly soluble salts.

The Counting Efficiency of Counter Tubes with Aluminum, Copper and Gold Cathodes for X-Rays in the Range 5 Kev to 60 Kev

Description: The author's measurement using counting tubes were performed with an X-ray beam, produced by an X-ray tube. The X-ray beam impinges on only a very small part of the counting tube. In this work the counting efficiency of counting tubes with A1-Cu- and Au-cathodes is determined for X-radiation in the range 5 Kev to 60 Kev.

Electrolytic Separation of Zirconium

Description: The authors began their investigation of electrolytic separation of zirconium iwht a repetition of the electrolysis of aqueous zirconium sulfate. The results were a highly dispersed black powder which are contaminated by oxides, carbides, nitrides, and other admixtures.

Chemical Reactions by Neutron-Capture (Szilard-Chalmers Effect)

Description: With the energies of nuclear reactions being superior by several orders of magnitude to those of chemical reactions, the nature of the chemical bond can be expected to influence the rate of nuclear reactions in only rare cases. Rather than discuss those chemical reactions the paper focuses on chemical reactions in which the atom under study undergo both nuclear and chemical reactions.

Problem of Liquid Air

Description: The problem of manufacturing cheap gaseous oxygen is one of the important means of technical progress for many branches of socialistic industry. A new method of making liquid air by using a special turbine is described in this article.

Contribution to the Problem Concerning the Surface Conductivity of Solid Dielectrics

Description: A study was made of the surface conductivity of glass, quartz, mica, nitrofilm, polymers, methyl-metacrylate, styrene, isobutylene, high-molecular paraffin. The conductivity was studies for the purpose of determining the number of ions found on the surface of a dielectric, which is necessary for the study of the iono-heterogeneous catalysis.

About an Intense-Light, Silent Discharge Tube for the Spectroscopic Examination of Small Amounts of Substances

Description: One of the problems in the spectrographic investigation of the atomic nucleus is to increase the efficiency of the source of light used for the investigation. Using new procedures outlined in the article new elements may be detected through nuclear change.

Separation of Elements 55 (Ra), 89 (Ac) and 90 (Th) with the Aid of Organic Solvents

Description: Guide by the known data on the solubilities of salts of barium, lanthanum, and thorium in organic solvents, the author wonders how one might easily accomplish with the aid of solvents, the separation of radium, actinium and thorium.

Small Scale Isotope Separations

Description: The separation of isotopes on a small scale has been accomplished by means of both old and new procedures. With the use of a newly developed ion source, it was possible to use the mass spectrograph to separate isotopes which could be volatilized in any form.

About the Model of Bacterial Photosynthesis

Description: At the base of photosynthesis of green sulfur bacteria lies an oxidation-reduction reaction of transferring hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide to carbon dioxide, accomplished with the participation of light energy. Based on experiments the author concludes that chlorophyll in the process of photosynthesis plays the role of optical sensitizer.

The Rate of Alkaline Hydrolysis as a Function of the Constitution of the Alcohol. II.

Description: In a previous paper the authors present some of the results of their investigation on the alkaline hydrolysis of esters that showed the constitution of the alkyl radical in the ester has a noticeable influence on the rate of hydrolysis. The authors have extended their experiments beyond the propyl acetates to include aliphatic alkyl esters.

Survey of the Present Status of Isotope Separation Methods

Description: The problem of the separation or enrichment of isotopes is as old as the knowledge of the existence of isotopes of stable elements. The article focuses on the mass-dependent property of atoms continuing to be investigated in laboratories to test its usefulness for new solutions to this problem.
