Test of Buried Structural-Plate Pipes Subjected to Blast Loading

Description: Abstract: Two 20-foot-long, 7-foot-diameter, 10-gauge structural-plate pipes having longitudinal joints with 8 bolts per foot were buried and tested in the Smoky event of operation Plumbob at nominal predicted pressure levels of approximately 170 and 195 psi.

Interpretation and Evaluation of the Uranium Occurences Near Goodsprings, Nevada: Final Report

Description: Abstract: The uranium occurrences near Goodsprings, Clark Co., Nevada, are divided into two distinct types which differ from each other in geographic distribution, localization of mineralization, mineralogy and origin. None of the known deposits is of present commercial significance and therefore this study emphasizes the genetic rather than the economic aspects.

A Conceptual Study of a 100 kw Gas Cooled Reactor Power Plant for a Remote Location

Description: From introduction: This report details the conceptual design of a 100 kw gas cooled reactor power plant of the type that would satisfy the electrical and space heating load of the Air Force distant early warning stations and might find application at other remote bases.

Boundary Disturbances in High Explosive Shock Tubes

Description: Abstract: High Velocity disturbance are observed to propagate in advance of the plane shock front along the walls of a high-explosive-operated shock tube. Experiments were performed which indicate that the disturbance proceeds at a constant velocity relative to the shock front, and carries a considerable amount of energy as evidenced by its ability to penetrate metal plates. The velocity of a similar disturbance observed along a rod placed on the axis of the shock tube normal to the plane shoc… more

Some Variable Contributors to Natural Background

Description: It was suggested that radon concentrations in air and potassium fertilizers on the ground contribute appreciably to natural background radiation levels. The effect on natural background gamma radiation from radon and its associated daughters in equilibrium and from potassium in fertilizers has been calculated and found to be negligible. Background radiation intensities have been assumed to be on the order of 10 [mu]rad/hr.

Steady State Temperature Distributions in Hollow Slugs

Description: This document is a sequel to HW-30226, "Steady State Temperature Distribution in a Solid Slug." A primary feature of the present as well as the former paper is a treatment of the stand heat flow equation in a manner which accounts accurately for the dependence of the thermal conductivity, K, on temperature, v.

Application of Heavy Media Separation, Flotation and Carbonate Leaching to Congo Ores

Description: The investigation of magnesitic-dolomite uranium ores from Union Miniere du Haute Katanga, Belgian Congo, was undertaken in order to examine the possibility of separating the uranium minerals from the carbonate minerals by Heavy Media Separation or froth flotation; thus reducing the sulfuric acid consumption during the uranium leach. In addition, the effect of carbonate leaching the whole ore and carbonate flotation products was examined.

Recovery of Uranium From Congo Leach Liquors With Ion Exchange Resins

Description: A method is described for recovery of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors of Congo ores using anion exchange resins. Excellent uranium recoveries were obtained in cyclic tests which indicate uranium capacities of 11 to 26 lbs. of U3O8 per cubic foot of resin per day. Preliminary tests indicate that sulfuric acid may be as effective as hydrochloric acid in providing the required acidity in the eluant.

Infrared Spectra and Structure of the Crystalline Sodium Acetate Complexes of U(VI), Np(VI), Pu(VI), and Am(VI). A Comparison of Metal-Oxygen Bond Distance and Bond fFrce Constant in this Series

Description: Infrared spectra of solid NaXO2(Ac)3, with X=U, Np, Pu, and Am, have been observed. From the symmetric and asymmetric stretching frequencies of the O-X-O groups, approximate X-O force constants have been calculated and were found to decrease in the order kU—O>kNp—O>kPu—O> kAm—O, the respective values being about 0.705, 0.698, 0.675, and 0.612 megadyne/cm. From the cell constants for NaXO2(Ac)3 it is apparent that the X-O bond distance decreases in the same order—RU—O>RNp—O>RPu—O>RAm—O. Thus, a … more
