14-Year 113Cd

Description: The half lives of Cd/sup 113m/ and Cd/sup 115m/ have been redetermined to be 14 sintering time 2 years and 44.2 sintering time 0.5 days, respectively. The ratio of Cd/sup 113m/Cd/sup 115m/ yields from thermal-neutron fission of U/sup 235/ is 0.27 sintering time 0.03, and the ratio of (n, ) formation cross sections is 0.31 sintering time 0.03. Combination of these ratios with literature values for the Cd/sup 115m/ fission yield and (n, ) formation cross section gives (1.9 sintering time 0.2) x 1… more

Absorption of Organic Acids on Thoria

Description: The adsorption of acetic and oleic acids on the surface of thoria was studied by means of infrared spectroscopy. An infrared analysis of the adsorbates before and after adsorption using differential double bean methods indicated that the adsorption of organic acids on thoria surfaces occurs by an esterification reaction between the organic acid and the hydroxylated thoria surface. Ammonia vapor will not adsorb on thoria, indicated the basic character of the hydroxylated surface.

Acute Radiotoxicity of Injected Yttrium91

Description: Report describing results of experiments that involved injecting radioactive yttrium into animals: "The excretion, retention, and distribution of the yttrium was measured, and its effect on survival and growth was observed. The average total excretion of Y91 to the time of death (from 76 hours to 24 days) was a little less than 30 per cent of the injected dose" (p. 2).

Adsorption of Radioactive Gases on Activated Carbon

Description: The purpose of this experiment is to study the quantitative adsorption characteristics of a carbon adsorber bed receiving a radioactive inert gas in a helium stream. An objective of the experiment is to measure the equilibrium transmission of the radio-active gas through a carbon adsorber in order to determine if radio-active decay of the adsorbed gas permits additional adsorption.

Annual Report of Research Progress

Description: This technical report constitutes a brief review of the work undertaken, entirely or in part, under the Contract AT(30-1)-1772 with eh United States Atomic Energy Commission. The work published during 1959 is listed at the end of this report and copies of the reprints or reports are attached where available. These investigations have been concerned with the examination of defect production and behavior as it may be observed by high frequency ultrasonic attenuation and velocity (modulus) changes… more

Application of Heavy Media Separation, Flotation and Carbonate Leaching to Congo Ores

Description: The investigation of magnesitic-dolomite uranium ores from Union Miniere du Haute Katanga, Belgian Congo, was undertaken in order to examine the possibility of separating the uranium minerals from the carbonate minerals by Heavy Media Separation or froth flotation; thus reducing the sulfuric acid consumption during the uranium leach. In addition, the effect of carbonate leaching the whole ore and carbonate flotation products was examined.

Attempted Modification of Susceptibility of Tumors to X-Radiation : Final Report for August 1 1957 to August 31, 1959

Description: Attempts to secure a high degree of synchronization of cell division of the Krebs mouse ascites carcinoma, by combined use of aminopterin and citrovorum factor, and by use of colchicine and N-acetyl colchinol, were unsuccessful. In the course of the work, a new method for securing smears of ascites tumor cells was out, which we believe will be found useful

Behavior of Polyvalent Metallic Ions in 100% Acetic Acid Reactions of Rare Earth Compounds in Acetic Acid

Description: "The solution of a polymeric oxide such as a rare earth oxide in protonic solvents such as acetic acid may be regarded as a steo-wise process involving rupture of Ln-O-Ln linkages, to form "hydroxyacetates" of varying molecular size and complexity. Intermediate oxo-hydroxo-brdiges aggregates could therefore be formed by solvolysis processes. Further reaction with acetic acid could effect dehydration of such "hydroxyacetates", to yield oxo-bridged acetates, Ln2O(OAc).

Boundary Disturbances in High Explosive Shock Tubes

Description: Abstract: High Velocity disturbance are observed to propagate in advance of the plane shock front along the walls of a high-explosive-operated shock tube. Experiments were performed which indicate that the disturbance proceeds at a constant velocity relative to the shock front, and carries a considerable amount of energy as evidenced by its ability to penetrate metal plates. The velocity of a similar disturbance observed along a rod placed on the axis of the shock tube normal to the plane shoc… more

Bulk Properties of Stables Isotopes as a Probe for Liquid-State and Solid-State Investigations

Description: "The availability of certain isotopes in bulk has made possible some new studies in solid- and liquid-state physics. Initial studies on lithium are described, the differences in lattice constant, bulk density, electric resistivity, thermoelectric force, and melting point for Li/sup 6/, Li/sup 7/, and natural Li beieng compared." Calculation of the G Factor for Gas Scattering Experiments

Description: The "G factor'' relating the yield to the beam intensity, target density, and scattering cross section is calculated for several types of aperture boundaries. The case of a front aperture composed of two parallel edges of infinite height with a rear aperture of any shape is calculated up to terms in the fourth derivative of the cross section. (W.D.M.)
