Effect of R.F. System on Betatron Oscillations

Description: The change in betatron frequency due to the focusing action of the radiofrequency cavities is calculated. It is found that at injection the fractional change in radial betatron frequency for particles with small phase oscillations is given by -0.025V, where V is the maximum r-f voltage per turn in Mev. There is an equal and opposite change in the vertical betatron frequency. Also it is proven, in a general manner, that the damping rate of the betatron oscillations is independent of the nature o… more

Stopping Cross Sections : Annual Report for the period March 16, 1957- March 15, 1958. (Report No. 8)

Description: Molecular stopping cross sections are reported for protons in bromine, chlorine, lead chloride, thallium chloride, and zinc phosphide. A description is given of a small, differentially pumped, gas scattering chamber designed for use with the Van de Graaff machine. The floor plan of the new Van de Graaff building under construction is included. (D.E.B.)

Zirconium Hazards Research

Description: "The study of the sensitivity characteristics of Zr samples such as sponge, scrap, foil, and powder was continued. Of particular interest was the determination of the relative sensitivity of these materials to such stimuli as electrostatic discharge and an induced shock wave. The investigation of the zirconium-water reaction and zirconium-gas reactions at relatively low temperatures was continued."

Water Hammer Tests Loop Able Pwp Land Reactor, 1957

Description: "This report essentially substantiates the preliminary data reported ln WAPD-PWR-PMF-898. The Primary Coolant System of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, comprises four loops. Each of the loops has one pump to control the mass rate of water flow-. A series of tests were conducted on the cooling system of the PWR land reactor to determine the magnitude and duration of the water hammer pressure wave resulting from check valve closure. The water hammer pressure wav… more

Applications for Lanthanon Oxides and Other Compounds in the Ceramic Industry

Description: Separation processes for production of pure rare earth oxides in useful quantities are discussed. A review of applications of these oxides in the ceramic industry in production of glasses, glazes, porcelain enamels, refractories, abrasives, electronic ceramics, and nuclear ceramics is also presented. 46 references.

Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media

Description: A wet collection system for aerosols has been developed using fibrous media. Tests show the performance to be in accord with recently developed theory of collection by fibrous media. The effects of varying aerosol particle size, particle density, and gas velocity have indicated that inertial impaction is the primary collection mechanism. Three-year operating experience on several full scale plant installations shows reliable performance.

A Single-Cycle Looping Device for Ferroelectric Ceramics

Description: This memorandum describes a circuit which was built up to obtain electric displacement versus electric fluid curves of ferroelectric ceramics. The circuit is designed so that these loops can be obtained using a single cycle or several cycles of a 60-cycle/sec sine wave. Also described are some preliminary measurements made with the circuit on lead zirconate titanate.

The Characteristic Energy Loss of Electrons Passing Through Metal Foils II. Dispersion Relation and Short Wave Length Cutoff for Plasma Oscillations

Description: Previous work is extended so as to provide a determination of the shortest wave length at which plasma oscillations can be sustained by a degenerate electron cap. The collective oscillations are treated without introducing collective coordinates, thereby avoiding possible complications associated with subsidiary conditions.

Large-Volume Liquid Scintillators and Their Applications

Description: One of the most important factors in determining the feasibility of a cosmic ray experiment is the expected counting rate. We feel that in some cases the gain in counting rate from the use of a large scintillator will be great enough to make its construction worthwhile.
