Airborne Radiometric Survey of the East Flank of the Big Horn Mountains, Wyoming and Montana

Description: Abstract: An airborne radiometric survey of parts of the east flank of the Big Horn Mountains was begun on June 23, and completed on August 27, 1952. An area of approximately 250 square miles was covered, and only two anomalies were found in the entire area. Flight lines were arranged in accordance with the geology of the area, particular attention being given to formations the stratigraphic equivalents of which are known to be uranium bearing in other areas. Two additional zones of radioactivi… more

Uranium Ore Controls of the Happy Jack Deposit, White Canyon, San Juan County, Utah

Description: Abstract: The Happy Jack uranium deposit of White Carron, San Juan County, Utah, was studied in connection with an Atomic Energy Commission exploration program. The major uranium ore control is a paleostream channel containing sediments of the Shinarump conglomerate. Intrachannel controls include organic matter, lithologic variations, and channel "lows". Microscopic studies reveal that uraninite, the primary ore mineral, occurs as cement and as a replacement of organic material. Both the uranin… more

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, October-December 1953

Description: "Work has continued on high temperature methods for processing irradiated uranium fuel. Additional results have been obtained with fused halide treatment, solid scavengers and direct Pu distillation. With fussed fluorides about 95 per cent of the Pu was removed from a uranium sample, while treatment of uranium with HC1 gas removed almost all the Pu and many fission products. treatment of molten uranium with uranium oxide removed a substantial fraction of the fission products without removing P… more

The Inference of Adsorption from Differential Double Layer Capacitance Measurements

Description: From Abstract : "Dependence of boundary tension and capacitance at the mercury-aqueous 0.1 N HClO4 interface on polarization and organic solute concentration were determined for the colutes n-amyl alcohol and phenol. ... An earlier treatment proposed by this Laboratory based on a (non-thermodynamic) assumption of linear variation of surface charge density with coverage appears adequately justified for inference of fractional surface coverages near the electrocapillary maximum, but must be consi… more

Planar Dynode Multipliers for High-Speed Counting

Description: Technical report discussing a new high-speed electron multiplier using a planar dynode configuration. This multiplier has a total transit time significantly shorter than available in conventional structures of equivalent gain. It also features rise-times generally less than three nanoseconds while providing the large sensitive area of an unfocused configuration. Two basic types of planar dynodes are employed: transmission secondary emission thin films as the early multiplier stages and silver… more

Factors Affecting the Precipitation of Tubanyl Peroxide from Gunk Solutions at Reduced Temperatures

Description: This paper reports work carried out to determine the factors necessary to give a filterable precipitation and determine the effects of these factors on the quantitativeness of the precipitation, and how any tendency to increase the tuballoy solubility may be overcome.

The Grüneisen Parameter for an Einstein Solid and Under Finite Strain

Description: The Grüneisen constant, as evaluated from the equation of state, is obtained for an Einstein solid. the presence of a state of finite hydrostatic pressure is taken into account explicitly by means of Murnaghan's theory of finite strain, to obtain the Grüneisen parameter's on the Debye and Einstein models. Results are identical in the two cases with the corresponding values obtained without use of the formal theory of finite strain.

The Nature of the Axioms of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

Description: "The formulation of field theories by means of Wightman functions is studied. It is shown that, given two field theories that satisfy all the axioms, one can construct a family of Wightmsn fields with the same properties by a process of superposition of Wightman functions. The condition of unitarity is formulated without reference to asymptotic conditions, and it is proved that the Wightman fields constructed by the superposition process (starting with "unitary" fields) fail to preserve unitari… more

Boundary Disturbances in High Explosive Shock Tubes

Description: From abstract: High velocity disturbances are observed to propagate along the walls of a high explosive operated shock tube in advance of the plane shock. Experiments are presented which determine the dependence of the geometry, energy, and velocity of the disturbance on such variables as the gas contained in the shock tube, the shock strength, and the roughness and composition of the supporting boundary. A model is constructed to explain the flow within the disturbance. Arguments are presented… more

The Surface Reaction Between Oxygen and Thorium

Description: Abstract: The rate of reaction of oxygen with arc-melted and rolled iodide thorium has been found to obey the parabolic rate law in the temperature range of 850 to 1415 C at 1 atmosphere pressure. The rate constant can be expressed as k = 6 x 10⁷ x e⁻⁶³³⁰⁰/RT cm²/sec. The energy of activation, 63,300 cal/mole, has a probable error of 2,100 cal/mole.
