Zirconium Metal Fines Recovery: Interim Technical Report for May 15, 1950 to December 15, 1950

Description: This report covers the laboratory and pilot plant investigation of the reclamation of the low hafnium zirconium fines resulting from the manufacture of zirconium sponge and zirconium crystal bar. The process investigated involved recovery of the zirconium as zirconium tetrachloride, by drying the fines in an atmosphere of nitrogen and subsequent chlorination of the fines with anhydrous hydrogen chloride at temperatures above the sublimation point of the product.

Production of Large Energetic Neutral Deuteron Beams

Description: Introduction: A proposal for using an energetic neutral deuteron beam for injection into a mirror machine has been made by Eugene Lauer. This report describes an experimental attempt to produce a large neutral deuteron beam. The beam from the NTA ion source was passed through a target of hydrogen gas where the charge exchange mechanics produced a beam of energetic neutral deuterium atoms.

Initial Measurements on the Angular Distribution of Deuterium Plasma Produced by a Pulsed Spark Source

Description: Abstract: "The deuterium plasma which is ejected by a 6000-ampere pulsed current through a rail-type spark source has a yield in the forward direction which is a factor of 5 to 10 greater than that in the perpendicular direction. This effect is believed to be due to the magnetic propulsion of the plasma."

Report on Shock Tube Experiments

Description: Abstract: An investigation of ionization by shock waves in hydrogen has been initiated. The shock waves are produced in a 1-inch diameter glass pipe by a high-voltage spark at one end. Variables which will influence attainment of the maximum degree of ionization and ion temperature are described. Spectroscopic methods of measuring ion density and temperature are outlined, and improvements in the design of the shock tube are discussed.

A 704 Program for Computing Thermal Neutron Spectra in Infinite Homogenous Media

Description: A flexible program has been prepared for solution of the neutron balance equation in an infinite homogeneous medium. This program is specifically designed for studying the effects of varying the energy transfer kernel on the resultant neutron spectrum. A rapidly converging iterative procedure is employed. The equation to be solved and the specific input information required by the program in order to compute spectra are explicitly stated. No discussion of the physics of the problem is given.

Air Diffusion in the Air Operating Water Flask. Section I. Test Results DL-S-205 (T-641110)

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the effect of continuous air pressurization of the Valve Operating System water flask on the the oxygen concentration of the water in the flask. Oxygen concentration in the Valve Operating System water flask increased during the testing period of seventeen days. It cannot be determined from the data obtained if equilibrium oxygen concentration was reached. The distribution of oxygen in the flask at the end of 17 days varied from approximately 12 ppm in t… more

Scavenging of Particulate Matter in Connection with Nuclear-Powered Ships. Report No. 1 (Scientific Report). Theoretical Dissertation on Diffusion and Deposition of Radioactive Particulate Matters in Connection with Nuclear Powered Ships

Description: The behavior of the cloud formed by finely divided radioactive matter released from a nuclear-powered ship is discussed. Sutton's equation, with Chamberlain's correction for deposition, is used for four sets of parameters. The results calculated by using the IBM-650 computer are presented in a series of 76 graphs. Wind velocities of 5, 10, and 15 mph and velocities of deposition equal to 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 cm/sec were used in computation. The ranges of the B/C and Q/R parameters are 10/sup … more

Periodic Radiation Survey. Section III. Second Performance. Test Results DL-S-184, T-612076

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the rate of radioactive decay of the hairpin loops after isolation and to determine the changes in radiation level resulting from continued operation of the reactor at power. The results indicate that the radiation decayed very rapidly after isolation of the hairpin loop. After one minute, the level had decayed to nearly its lowest point. Discrepancies which appear in the data can be attributed to two factors: (1) changing the survey meter part way thro… more
